It was a period of severe dust storms plus a drought and greatly damaged the agricultural prairies. The air and ground were both just pure dust and there was no raid to wash it away. The "dust bowl states" included Kansas, Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Nebraska, and Oklahoma. Nearly 2.5 million people left these states.
