My chapter 7 aha was learning all the different kinds of poetry again because I always forget the different kinds and the rules that go along with them, like how a Haiku is 5,7,5 format.

For me, it was the fact that there are always so many more types of poems that I remember. It was good to have a refresher on the different types and the rules that follow them.

I knew that some songs were considered to be poetry but it didn't really click and it got me thinking about how using songs and other media can be a great way to get kids interested and make connections to poetry when introducing that unit.

My aha was reading the chart of do's and don'ts. I never considered how younger kids might easily get bored with poetry, so allowing them to have freedom early on to discover what they like can help keep them interested.

My biggest AHA moment was realizing how much poetry is introduced in elementary school. I remember learning about poems very briefly, but I did realize how many children's books contained poetry.

My biggest AHA moment was when chapter 7 talked about how nursery rhymes are a type of poetry. In specific the itsy bitsy spider and rock a bye baby are poems.

There was a moment in the chapter that brought me back to my early childhood, and in my elementary school we came to young authors here at NMU every year, so I remember having a blast writing my own little poem to present to my "buddies" from the other schools.

I connected with the idea that students lose interest in poetry by the 5th grade. I think that poetry is introduced well in lower elementary through nursery rhymes, but when we get to upper elementary and start having students read long poems that are harder to understand, it gets less interesting.

An AHA moment I had while going through chapter seven was how much I really enjoyed narrative poetry, and how immersed I got into it. I think this sort of spark for kids can be crucial for opening up their minds more when reading both books and poetry, and it can also spark the initial interest in poetry that a kid may need.

One AHA moment for me was learning what a "Limerick" poem is. They are humorous 5-lined verse in which lines 1,2, and 5 rhyme. Lines 3 and 4 rhyme with each other as well.

My big AHA! was learning about the connection with poetry and choral. Music and voice can help make poetry more moving and it creactive a group of people working towards one feeling/idea vs. one person. This reminded me of the middle school Chorus concert last year. The students did poetry reading from students in Flint, Michigan while other students played intrustrments and sang. The music and words made the piece so moving. This reading helped me make that connection on why I felt so moved in the past by these kinds of pieces and it will help me make this personal connections with poetry for my future students!

I really liked the idea of single-poem picture books. I think this makes it much easier for kids to stay engaged while reading poems and keeps it interesting for them.

My AHA moment came from the table of "dos and don'ts" for poetry instruction. I was surprised to read that analysis should NOT be the focus of poetry instruction, because I felt as though this was my experience in elementary school all the way up through high school. While I know analysis can suck some of the fun out of poetry, it also develops comprehension and critical thinking skills.

My 'aha' moment came from discussing limericks. I never really clicked with them when learning about them in school, and the discussion in the book helped it click into my head the ways in which it connects with other forms of poetry.

Reading the poetry chapter, I was thinking about the different learning points that we could talk about as a class. There is usually figurative language (metaphors, similes, onomatopoeias, etc.) that could be discussed. Poems often incorporate rhyming as well, allowing the students to feel a rhythm and connect with the poems easily. They are often written with emotion, which could be a great way to incorporate SEL in the classroom.

I always remember how the teacher and the class would act out poems in elementary school to engage the class. It made me realize how my experience as I got older, things didn't happen that way anymore. Which is probably why I always found the poetry unit in high school to be a little difficult because I wasn't understanding different connections.

Poems that include rhyming can be an extremely useful tool to help children with memorization and to simplify reading types like nursery rhymes. My AHA moment was remembering how much my past teachers used this in early elementary school to make learning to read more fun and engaging.

While reading chapter 7, I took interest in the topic "Poetry in the Classroom", because it describes how kids in lower grades k-5, enjoy poetry and its creativeness. Then in middle and high school, this love for poetry declines. I agree with this because it happened to me as well. In elementary we do so many fun things with poetry but then in high school, poetry is more memorizing the parts and types rather than being creative.

My chapter 7 aha moment was learning different types of poetry like, sijo's. limerick's, ballad's, etc. I feel like I forget how many different types of poems there really are and noting how some are different or similar. I remember my English teacher in high school was really into poetry, she would always talk about how many different ways there are to express yourself.

While reading chapter 7, my aha moment was completely forgetting that there were different types of poetry. I had also forgotten that poetry does not need to rhyme be considered a poem.
