This formative assessment is great for teachers to use to assess where students are at during the beginning, middle and end of the lesson. Students will be given a question to think upon, then they will share with a partner. Lastly, they will share their ideas out loud so the teacher can assess where they are at.

This is another great way for teachers to assess where students are at during any point of a lesson or review. The teacher will propose a question to her class. There will be four labeled corners (agree, strongly agree, disagree, strongly disagree) to which the students must go to and then back up their response. Based on the response the teacher will know where her students are at.

Ask students a question regarding the lesson. Have them then write their answer on a sticky note with an explanation to their answer. Then have students post the notes on the board. The teacher can then go back and look at the responses as a whole to see where her students are at.

Before students are allowed to come into the classroom, have them write on an "access pass" what they know about a particular topic before you begin teaching for the day. This will allow the teacher to gauge where her students are at before she has given any sort of instruction.

Have students write up a "twitter response" on the computer (using word rather than the actual twitter site) where they are only allowed to respond to the teacher using 140 characters. This forces students to have to pay close attention to the detail they are sharing rather than the fluff.

This assessment is awesome for the students with artistic abilities. Read a passage of some sort for the content you are speaking about (best used in science, social studies or literary instruction). Have students draw a picture based on what you just read without letting them see any type of visual representation. This will allow the teacher to see what the students grasped onto from the read information.

Rather than having students stress over quizzes on paper that seem so boring, have them participate in a kahoot quiz! The kahoot quiz allows students to feel as if they are playing a game rather than taking an actual quiz. Use this to see what your students gathered or what they know.

Ask the students a question regarding the content taught or before it is taught. Give students 30 seconds to write on the white board then flip them up in the air where you can see them. Quickly assess students responses to see where they are at.

Let students know that they must explain how their invention relates.

Ask your students if they understand what you have been discussing in class so far. If they feel like they have, tell students to close their fist tightly to show they have a good grip on the matter. If they don't understand, have them open their hand to show they didn't grasp the concept. If they are in between have the students wave their hand back and fourth. This will let the teacher know how to either approach certain students or if she/he needs to find a way to reteach the information.
