I think apps, such as Edpuzzle can go some way to mitigating against that. We also have some fairly long videos in our early blended content for our Pre-sess, and I think the inclusion of regular questions throughout these would encourage a much more active approach to learning, as well as highlighting the key points. It's great for experience sharing / interest generation / schemata raising, and students can see their peers' responses after they've submitted their own, so creates a sense of community.
