The word fraction actually comes from the Latin "fractio" which means to break. From as early as 1800 BC, the Egyptians were writing fractions. Their number system was a base 10

idea (a little bit like ours now) so they had separate symbols for 1,10, 100 ,1000, 10000, 100000 and 1000000. The ancient Egyptian writing system was all in pictures which were called hieroglyphs. The Babylonians were the first people to come up with a more sensible way of representing fractions.Their number system was organised around the number 60, so we say it is base 60 . In other words they grouped numbers into 60s, whereas we group into 10s. (We still use base 60

in our measurement of time and angles.) However, they also grouped into 10s and so only had two symbols, one for a unit and one for a

10.

:

It is most likely a half gallon. Beverages you purchase in the store may come down the middle liter containers. When you need to get some nourishment at the shop, you may request a quarter or a large portion of a pound. Your parents presumably consider how much gas they have each day. It's incredible to have a full tank, yet they additionally know whether they have 75%, a half, or a fourth of a tank left. Fractions are also used in cooking, construction and science.
