Most of the top four candidates for presidency are extremely popular – not for their excellent contributions to the Philippines or brilliant solutions to high priority issues, but rather for other aspects that are not exactly relevant in pushing for growth and sustainability of the country. There is a real worry if the citizens eligible for voting would choose fame as a more important deciding factor instead of actual potential and capability. With this, I pray that the Lord send His Spirit to bestow upon Filipinos the gifts of Wisdom and Counsel as they cast their votes during the elections in May. I also pray that whoever will be elected as government leaders would be able to provide for all Filipinos and may come up with concrete plans to improve our country and mitigate the top problems that have been affecting the people tremendously such as the pandemic, poverty, and unemployment.

General Thoughts 
Becoming the president of the Philippines is a huge responsibility to bear. Whoever sits in this position of authority can revolutionize the country for generations to come. For the past few decades, the country has been dominated by influential political dynasties which have gatekept politics from other more qualified communities. As a result, controversial issues such as media propaganda, historical revisionism, and the revival of Duterte’s EJK remain to be discussed within the elite. In a country filled with democratic principles, which highlights the importance of transparency, participation, and accountability, it’s integral for voters to be well-educated of their desired candidates.

Enlighten our global leaders and government officials, especially those who have committed malicious crimes due to their selfish interests. Touch their hearts so they can listen to the voices of the vulnerable and embody the virtues of honesty, transparency, and accountability.  Sanctify their character so their ideologies are personified through their day-to-day tasks. 

With the arrival of the upcoming 2022 elections, may You grant all voters the knowledge to critically choose the best candidate to lead the nation. We also pray for politicians partaking in this event, that they may be fuelled with the motivation to address urgent issues in the Philippines.

However, once elected, will any of these candidates fulfill their promises especially given their tarnished backgrounds? One of our leading presidential candidates is a coward who can’t even show up to interviews or his trial because he can’t confront what he’s done or what he is still doing up until today, but instead makes the most atrocious excuses to get out of these difficult situations. Even our most promising candidate has a massive stain in her reputation, “formerly” being part of the liberal party, which for years has been using the Aquino name to manipulate and deceive their followers for political gain and corruption. Knowing that majority of the Philippine’s population belongs to the lower class and uneducated, these candidates will continue to take advantage of these people using bribes and empty promises, and since not many people are well educated, they will be easily manipulated. However, later on, they will suffer from the consequences of electing the wrong officials once again, being the most vulnerable class. The lower class isn’t the only contributor to this problem because the rich, although supposedly “well educated”, often make selfish choices when it comes to these issues, such as voting for a candidate because they will benefit off of their chosen candidate or even worse, not voting at all. Sad to say, the basis for choosing the best candidate nowadays is popularity instead of their competence, achievements, credibility, transparency, character, etc. With the lack of voter’s education, our country will continue to be ruled and dominated by corrupt dynasts, clowns, cowards and incompetents which will greatly hinder us from prospering and achieving the equality we have long dreamed of. Due to this, more Filipinos will fall into the trap of their candidate’s empty promises, and we will fail to eliminate the other factors such as vote-buying and vote intimidation. Suffice to say, the people’s decisions and votes will determine the future of our country and our people. With the right president and an effective government, we will be able to abolish the lingering social issues that have been driving our country into the ground for decades (unemployment, lack of social services, poverty, etc). With this being said, it is important to choose wisely and sensibly- i am not specifically pertaining to who among the candidates you should vote for, but rather who in society are you reaching out to and will benefit from your vote. It is a matter of  relations, societal bias, exploitation and bribery that closes the lid. Many of our fellow countrymen have not gone through proper education- causing the majority of the Philippines’ population to be more gullible to lies. Leaders serve as a driving force to pave a hopeful path not only for the present generation but also for the future. If we select the wrong leader, more problems will be added to our overflowing bag of issues. In order for the Philippines to finally see a good future, Filipinos need to recognize the values that each candidate possesses. A good leader should not only have wit but also hold the values of truth, understanding, wisdom, selflessness, empathy, commitment, passion and integrity. He/she would put the welfare of his/her country before their own needs. As local and national elections are near, I pray that eligible voters choose the most qualified candidate wisely. I also pray for our awaited leaders that they may execute their jobs properly.
