Point of views:

Assumptions:
- Assuming that they are able to get unskilled jobs, they may not be able to be paid enough to survive due to their unskilled nature

Issue:
- If the people stay on, their life will be in danger and they will not be able to make a living due to the constant flooding

Implications of relocation:
1. Unable to find housing to stay outside the forest as their relocation site is not completed.

2. Having to live in squalid areas and drink from polluted waters. They are also given medicine like Panadol which they are not used to and make them sicker.

3. No reliable jobs with enough pay for them to survive.

Points of view:
The Penan: They do not want to relocate as they are used to the forest, knowing which trees to use for fruit, houses, poison and more. They do not want to leave their culture and roots.

The Government: They want the people to relocate to escape the forest which is being cleared for wood. They do not recognise the Penans rights to their land.

The Loggers: They want the Penan to move out and stop blocking them from logging the forest so they can build oil palm plantations.

The public: Some people do not want the Penan to relocate because they will take up a lot of jobs, some want them to preserve their culture and do not relocate.

Tourists: They want the Penans to stay so that future generations are able to see the cultures of the Penan. 

Assumptions:
1. All Penans are not used to modern food, medicine and housing.

2. The Penans may not have a skill that they are good at, other than hunting, which is not useful in the modern society.

3. The government wants the Penan to relocate and sacrifice their culture.

Issue:
Logging of the forest forces the Penan to relocate, so they will  not be able to live in the forest. Loggers want to clear the forest, but Penans try to stop them and the Penan get arrested. The government wants them to relocate to make use of the land to build buildings.

Final decision:
Relocate.

- Get better education and better jobs. However, congestion in cities may lead to loss of initial jobs, has a high risk.

Point of views:
1) People living on Anak Krakatoa
- they would like to stay on due to the fertile volcanic soil, used to make their income for agriculture.
- There is an advanced warning system installed to monitor Anak Krakatoa.
- There is a risk of them not being able to find a job due to overpopulation of the city. Too many people. Too little space. This can lead to the weakening of the economy as not everyone is able to contribute to the economy. As such, not only are some families breadwinners lost, but the economy also suffers as a result.
-They might not have the skills for some jobs

2) the government
- Wants more people to relocate to city as
1. it is dangerous near the volcano
2. Wants to boost metropolitan rating to global standards
-Attract more tourism to boost economy

3) The people in the city
- Does not want people from Anak Krakatoa to go to city as they might lose their jobs to the people from Anak Krakatoa

Assumptions:
- Assuming that they are unable to get jobs that require skill due to overpopulation.
-Assuming that the people in the city are not welcoming
-Assuming that the people enjoy their life on Anak Krakatoa

Issue:
- If the people relocate, overpopulation will have a negative effect on the Anak Krakatoa people. As such, our final decision is...

Implications of relocation:
The Penans would not be able to find skilled jobs, resulting in not being paid well. They do not have much education, not knowing many skills like reading and writing. The Penan people may not want to leave their culture and history.

Point of Views:
1. Government: 
The government will provide education for those Penans relocating to get better jobs and paid better. They want the space in the forest in order to have more space to build more houses.
2. The Penan:
The Penans would like to stay as they do not want to relocate and change their lifestyle and culture.
3. The public: 
Some people do not want the Penan to relocate because they will take up a lot of jobs and they will not have jobs. Some want them to preserve their culture and not relocate. Some people may also find the Penan people a nuisance to their livelihood.

Assumptions:
  1. They do not have education./They do not have much access to education.
  2. They do not know how to read, write or count.
  3. They do not know how to operate most electronics.

Issue:
If the Penan people stay, they will be in danger. Firstly, of the logged trees falling on them due to deforestation. Secondly, destroying their properties and houses, forcing them to relocate. And if they rejected relocating, they could be arrested.

1. The villagers may not be able to adjust to the city lifestyle as they may be used to their simple way of life.
2. Also, their livestock may suffer if they move because they may be unable to find food and employment.
3.  There will not be an abundant and free source of water and fish. No one will tend to the crops, hence there might be loss of vegetation and supply of food may decrease.
4. The dangers of living near the Mekong will be eliminated as there will be no impact from the floods.
5.  The floods might not be detected, and the effects might not be mitigated.
Implications of staying:
1. They have to predict when the floods will happen so they can prepare: e.g. store hay for the cattle.
2. There may be more casualties due to the annual floods from the Mekong River. There will also be Human, Social and Economic loss from the floods.
3.  The floods might wash away crops and destroy infrastructure and buildings.
4.  The water is unhygienic, and might cause sickness.

Points Of View
Villagers
- Want to stay, as there will not be major changes in their livelihood, and have a rich supply of food.
Mekong River Commission
- Would manage the floods and mitigate the effects to protect the villagers.
Assumptions
 - Assuming they do not have a proper education, they may be stuck in the poverty cycle, and are unable to survive.
- They might not be able to adapt to the new environment.

2. There is no guaranteed chance of the villagers finding a job after relocating.

Implications of staying:
1. Will have fertile soil to grow crops; have a steady supply of food.
2. Will be able to get water from the river.
3. Floods may occur and wash away crops or destroy their houses.
4. Living costs are minimal.
Points of view:
We think that the people living near the mekong river would be better off in the city where they would receive proper medical treatment and do not have to worry about finding food, as it would be provided to them by the community.

The villager would not be supportive of the relocation due to the fact that they have formed a strong relation between each other and most of them are illiterate.
Evidence:
Unprecedented social and economic development in the Greater Mekong makes conservation work here especially urgent and significant. The most pressing threats are hydropower development, climate change, illegal wildlife trade and habitat loss.

Assumptions:
The people would enjoy staying near the Mekong river as that was where they grew up and where their ancestors did too, holding some sentimental value to them. Moving them to the city might be very hard for them as they would be leaving their past behind, the place they were brought up. 

There would be enough housing for the villagers provided that they would want to relocate to the cities where they is limited space. The mekong river is a friendly place for the villager to live in where all of the share a friendly bond with rings them together.

Issue:
Living near the river may endanger the lives of the people and kill crops that they have grown

  1. Their livestock will be very hard to handle if they move. The cattle would not have enough food to eat and as such may die.
  2. It will be very difficult to relocate everything so some things will have to be left behind, such as property and livestock.
  3. The villagers may not be able to find jobs in the city, and as such will have to settle for menial labour for pittance. Then, the locals which work in local labour will be either fired or demoted, and thus leading to the problem of unemployment.
  4. There would be less primary industries as their farms would be abandoned. 
  5. The people are used to the area.
  6. Only 0.00001% of the population dies each year from floods.

Implications of staying:
  1. The flooding of the Mekong river will kill many people and destroy a lot of property.
  2. The suppressed Mekong River will continue to affect the ecosystem.
Points of view:
Farmers: Floods are freshwater resources and they wash up silt to the fields. Their fields would have silt on them and they would become fertile, thus enriching the healthiness of the plants and crops. The floods wash hundreds of thousands of hectares of rice seedlings. 

Locals in general: The floodwaters wash up fish, algae and aquatic organisms to the rivers of the plain. The river also provides livelihood like fishing and it provides a means of transportation.

Environmentalists: Floodwaters enrich the ecosystem along the riverbanks.

Assumptions:
  • Assuming that the natives who stay near the Mekong river have good lives and already have made a living.
  • Assuming that the natives have already mitigated the effects of the floodwaters’ destruction.
  • Assuming that they are not as educated as city folk

Issue: If the people move, their lives will be affected and they will not be able to get good jobs and they will also not be able to get used to the new environment.

Solution
Measure the time when the Mekong floods, and evacuate to a decided area so the death toll will be none. Propose to the government that the cost of the dams can be covered with the money earned from the power generated.

  • There will be less fertile soil and they may have to find other jobs as crops will not grow as well
  • They will no longer be able to find minerals or precious stones usually found in the volcanic rocks.
  • Geothermal energy can no longer be harnessed by the people to be converted to electrical energy for use.
  •  The people have a higher chance of survival as there is no risk of imminent death by volcanic eruption.

Points of View
  1. People - They are constantly in danger though they can make a living from farming on the fertile soil and earn a lot of money
  2. Government - They think that it will be better for the Indonesians to relocate as they will be safe


Issues of concern
If we stay:
  • They can earn money and make a living growing crops with the nutrient-rich soil.
  • Volcano may erupt and kill them, or cause a lot of inconvenience.
  • The houses and crops will all get destroyed.
If we relocate
  • They will have to adopt an entirely new style of living as many things are gone, such as geothermal energy, fertile soil, minerals etc.
  • They will need to adapt.
  • They will be safe from eruptions.
  • There will be new opportunities to improve

Final Decision:
