1. Connection: Communicate the teaching point/lesson objective - The meaning of inference. - Today's teaching point: Using textual clues to infer character traits and motivation/reasons. - Identifying less obvious/implicit

2. Modeling:
"The treasure is mine," shouted Herbert.......Herbert pushed Harry. SPLASH.
The teacher uses these sentences to model inferring Herbert's character trait:
Herbert comes across as self-centered as he pushed his brother off the boat without thinking about the consequences. I can say so based on his actions.
The actions of the character are one piece of evidence that can be used to infer character traits. Refer to the anchor chart to discuss the use of thoughts, dialogue, feelings as evidence along with action to identify character traits.

Grade 6-7: Motivation: What made him act like this/do this? Maybe he became extremely greedy and he acted out of greed and self-interest.

3. Have-a-Go:
Read the rest of the story and use the last two pages to infer and identify at least one character trait and motivation for Herbert and Harry. Discuss in breakout rooms.

4. Link: 
Grade 3: While you are reading a story/book during your independent time/ DEAR time, identify some actions of a character that help you infer character traits of the character.
