         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Land Degradation </strong>- The loss of productivity and decline in fertility of land-based environments as a result of human activity.<br>- Affects a quarter of the world's total land area and 38% of world's farmed areas.<br>- 1.5 million people are affected by directly land degradation.<br>- Contributes to climate change as degraded land stores less carbon dioxide than natural land such as rainforests.<br><br><strong>Type 1 - Soil Degradation</strong> - The loss of fertility of the soil, often due to a chemical change.<br>- Can degrade by becoming compacted by hard-hooved animals or become acidic due to a build up of fertiliser or loss of soil nutrients.<br>- One of the greatest problems with soil degradation in Australia is the build-up of salt in the topsoil(salinity).<br><br><strong>Type 2 - Soil Erosion </strong>- Where soil is gradually worn away by natural phenomena.<br>- Human activities can accelerate erosion in many areas.<br>- Cleared land is much more vulnerable to wind, gully and sheet erosion.<br>Much of Australia is at risk from one or more types of erosion.<br><br><strong>Type 3 - Ecosystem Decline -</strong> When natural ecosystems of an area become degraded through loss of vegetation, invasive species or a decline in streams or rivers.&nbsp;<br>- When coupled with a quality loss in soil, degradation can lead to desertification, particularly in areas close to existing deserts.<br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Atmosphere Degradation - </strong>The degrading of the atmosphere through the by-products of fossil fuel burning and other dangerous air pollutants and chemicals.&nbsp;</div><ul><li>Pollutants such as carbon, nitrogen and sulfur emitted from factories and transport are disrupting the natural balance of atmospheric gases.&nbsp;</li><li>This change is a large contributor to the global temperature rising and the climate dramatically changing.</li></ul><div><br></div><div><strong>Air Pollution -</strong> The world’s worst environmental health risk today, caused majorly by the emissions from factories. &nbsp;</div><ul><li>Causes increased rates of asthma, lung and heart disease&nbsp;</li><li>Approximately 3.5 million (3500000) people die from environmental air pollution annually&nbsp;</li><li>4.3 million (4300000) are estimated to die from indoor air pollution annually.</li><li>Although regulations are underway to reduce air pollution, some countries' air pollution is still getting worse, especially in Asia and Africa.</li><li>This is mainly due to population growth and expansion as cheap energy is needed to power new cities.</li></ul><div><br></div><div><strong>India - An Air Pollution Hotspot&nbsp;</strong></div><ul><li>India has some of the highest levels of air pollution according to the WHO and it is estimated that half a million Indians die prematurely from the air pollution annually.</li><li>Most of the air pollution comes from car engines in the congested traffic of India but some is also produced in the factories providing the cities with energy.</li></ul>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Water Degradation</strong></div><div>Inland bodies of water are one of the most degraded environments in the world. Human activities have lowered the quality and quantity of usable water.</div><div><br></div><div>Causes:</div><ul><li>Of all the 292 rivers in the world, 2/3 have been disrupted by dams.</li><li>Pollution: shipping, fishing, and oil drilling.</li></ul><div>Consequences:</div><ul><li>Water pollution has devastating effects, people lose access to clean drinking water.</li><li>Fish or other animals who depend on water die or there will be a slow decline in population.</li></ul><div><br><br></div>]]></description>
