The plot of the story, or a simple summary would be: After the war between the titans and the gods was over, there were two brothers who were called Prometheus and Epimethius who were titans, and had sided with the gods. Prometheus always thought of the future, while Epimethius always thought of the past. Jupiter had trusted these brothers, and he entrusted them with the task of creating the first life on Earth. Prometheus had made men and he had lived among them during the “golden age,” and then Saturn was no longer king, Prometheus had thought of a way to make the conditions for men better; he wanted them to have fire. Prometheus had asked Jupiter for fire so that men could enjoy it and use it, but Jupiter declined the request completely and refused to give men a single spark. Prometheus planned to still give men fire, so one day he decided to make some fire and show it to the men and then teach them how to make it, while also teaching a lot of other things little by little.

Jupiter had decided to look down upon the men, and found that they were all happy, and were burning fire and doing things that Jupiter had not allowed. Jupiter found out who had done all this, and found out that it was Prometheus. Zeus let the men keep their fire but he was going to make their lives 10 times more miserable than before. Zeus was going to punish Prometheus for his actions. He was going to do so in a very weird manner, by creating the first woman, who was going to receive godly gifts. Pandora was now created with all the gifts from the gods, and she was a gift to Epimetheus as his wife. Prometheus warned his brother to be aware of the gifts from Jupiter, since they are coming from an evil tyrant. Pandora had had a casket that was given to her by Jupiter when they parted. Athena had told Pandora to never look at the things inside or to ever open the box. Pandora was very curious about the box and started to question herself. Pandora opened the box after questioning herself. What comes out is thousands of creatures, full of diseases and sickness for the men. These creatures went into every household. They made the lives for men miserable, and it could’ve gone way worse, had it not been for Pandora. She had shut the lid quick enough that she kept a big amount of the creatures in the box, never to come out again.

The theme of the story is how suffering was introduced into the world, in the form of monsters, and how curiosity can be a dangerous thing. The character Pandora mainly shows curiosity. As stated in the text, "“Why did Jupiter give them to me if I should never use them, nor so much as look at them?” she asked "(Paragraph 29). Here Pandora had started to think about the box, and why she was warned about not looking into them. So she eventually started to get curiosity, and started to open the box, as stated in the text, "She opened the lid a very little, just to peep inside. All at once there was a whirring, rustling sound, and before she could shut it down again, out flew ten thousand strange creatures with death-like faces and gaunt and dreadful forms, such as nobody in all the world had ever seen." (Paragraph 32). After Pandora completing her curious "mission" there was so many creatures, all evil, that had come out extremely quickly and they had started to come out in numbers. Eventually they had reached the whole world, and consumed the world with evil and darkness, showing that curiosity can lead to it's bad things, just like everything else in the world can. The setting of the world being in such a great place in terms of advancements, and then evil coming right back, shows that curiosity can have devastating effects, and quick effects too.
