Marta’s answer: I’m studying Early Childhood Education at Loyola University in Seville. I absolutely love my major and do not regret having chose this degree one bit. My dream is to become an English teacher and show my future students how fun learning this language can be!

We have plenty of subjects, though this semester I only have three: Mathematics Teaching I, Visual Arts and Physical Education. I love all the subjects, though I really like visual arts because it’s all about being crafty and artistic which I absolutely love. Also, I think Mathematics Teaching I is quite interesting since we are learning about different resources and methodologies to use while teaching our future students’ math’s.

1. Question A: What kind of teaching methods do teachers (in schools/In higher education) use in your country (eg: project-based learning, frontal teaching methods, groupwork, active pedagogy, etc.) Are pupils/students invited to participate actively?

In our country (Spain) we use plenty of teaching methods and strategies in order to teach our students. Our main goal is to individualize our students learning process as much as possible so as considering each one of their specific needs.

It´s true that throughout the years, education has changed in many aspects. When we were young the educational system was based on a more traditional philosophy, this aspect has changed throughout the years by innovating and including new methodologies and providing more adapted attention in classes. Some of the methodologies we use are for example: Cooperative Learning, Project based learning, Humanistic approaches, Game-based learning etc. How about you guys? What strategies do you all use to teach students?

On the other hand, we have some international students in our classroom from Slovakia. This is what they say about their country’s teaching methods:

“ In our country (Slovakia) teachers use these methods:

- mainly frontal teaching methods (lectures)

- group work, individual work (seminars)

- we have more theoretical lessons than practical ones

- we don´t have many projects, we have more essays

Teachers put more importance into final exams rather than continuous work during the semester. Students are not very actively participating throughout the academic year.”

Our Spanish University always highlights the need to use ICT. It´s highly important to use ICT in our degree since nowadays it´s very important to know how to use them and apply them in the future as teachers. We always use computers and create different projects by mainly using ICT´s. We have a student internet platform called Moodle in which we can access our different subject materials and resources in order to follow our class sessions.

Our Slovakian team members have a different way of working with ICT’s:

“In our home university in Slovakia we have these ICT tools:

- MAIS (online evaluation system for students)

- MOODLE (open-source learning management system)

- digital didactic aids useful for teaching in kindergarten and early elementary schools

- DATA projectors, which are used by teachers during the lectures

- we do tests mainly in written form and we have a computer rooms in order to do them in digital form”
