The other 3 band members were not united with us in our vision for the band and there was some unacceptable professional misconduct directed towards myself and Josh plus a lack of commitment. Whilst this has been extremely difficult to come to terms with, Josh and I are of the opinion that in the long term this is the right thing for CLAYTREE and for our project - we now have full creative control and less people to manage. Short term, there are quite a few issues that we're having to work through for the project since our emotional states have been impacted and crucially our team and timeline has had to change. We've had to postpone our first release to January (which is probably the best thing anyway) and cancel all of our gigs in November to give ourselves enough time to build a live session band and reconsider our business structure. In the post below this, I've outlined the new release dates along with new release gig dates. Josh Bisson and I are the main songwriters; I am the lead vocalist and Josh is the lead guitarist. We formed CLAYTREE in June 2020 when we began writing our first track 'Somebody's Gotta Lose', which we later submitted for our first Waterbear assessment, though we didn't have a name yet. During the COVID lockdown of March 2021, we came up with the name CLAYTREE and found a drummer, bassist and second guitarist at Waterbear. The line-up changed a few times once we'd all returned to Brighton for various reasons but we were a 5-piece for nearly a year. 

Currently in 2022, CLAYTREE are a duo. By having a foothold in both the live and recorded music industries, CLAYTREE’s members — myself and Josh — are also more likely to develop and maintain a sustainable income and career in music, enabling us to take CLAYTREE as far as possible and to pursue any other projects we are passionate about.

We’re competing with every single artist all over the world that is releasing music around the same time. This does give us many opportunities to learn from various competitors. In terms of competitors within the same genre (or similar) targeting the same audience, we’ve identified Paramore at the top end of the market and more locally, Gnarlah and Dirtsharks. Paramore have many more resources than we or our local competitors do and their whole campaign for their new album and preceding singles is about rebranding into a new version of themselves that combines previous eras — as we’re an emerging artist, we have no previous eras in terms of music but we are rebranding as a duo from a 5-piece and altering our image and marketing to fit that. Gnarlah and Dirtsharks both have a history of great releases and release strategies. For example, Gnarlah have released 4 singles over a couple of years and are only now releasing their EP, despite being on the scene for a while, which means they’ll have more engagement with the EP from taking their time to grow their audience with the singles and live shows — we’re not at the point of releasing an EP and we also aren’t signed to a label, but we do have many songs we are confident in releasing over the next few years, so this is a good strategy to look at for the future and their music videos are good reference points for ours too. Dirtsharks are releasing an EP after also being active for years both in their hometown and Brighton, and they’ve released multiple singles over the last few years with really good DIY music videos — they’re also not signed to a label so it’s encouraging to see the same strategy work for a signed band and a DIY band. This same strategy is also being used by Paramore but on a larger scale.

Other/external personnel for this project include: Sam French, who is mixing all three tracks; Kieron Pepper, who has already helped with the creative output for the tracks and aids in our artist development; my parents, Chris & Anneliese Bisson, who have provided financial support in the way of a loan to cover recording costs and post-production costs, and are helping to design and maintain our website; Rebecca Harvey who is creating the cover art for all three singles; Steven Kerry who will be mastering our tracks; Rob Blackham as our campaign photographer; Max Pill as our videographer; Kairen Kemp as our PR advisor/mentor; Jodie Amos as our contact for the Waterbear Venue; live sound engineer from the Waterbear Venue; Waterbear social media team for extra promotion; merchandise production people; and two session players (bass and drums).
