The EAL process at Prendergast Ladywell School starts with an interview by the Head of Year and EAL Team, followed by an initial English assessment. For Key Stage 3 (KS3) students, the path depends on their English level. Students who score "Below NASSEA's EAL Step 2" complete a KS3 EAL Induction Programme, followed by in-class support and the use of their first language. Those who score "Above NASSEA's EAL Step 2 in English" receive partnership planning and teaching, along with first-language and in-class support.

For Key Stage 4 (KS4) students scoring "Below EAL Step 2," the school provides three hours of weekly Study Support, help through language clubs to gain GCSEs in their heritage language, and standard in-class support. As shown in both KS3 and KS4 pathways also feed into a shared set of specialised programs, which include the Lexia Reading intervention, Handwriting club, Young Interpreters club, and specific exam support for Community Languages GCSEs.

EAL Academy Quality Mark Silver Award

Prendergast Ladywell School

EAL Quality Mark Award – Silver

Prendergast Ladywell School is situated in the London Borough of Lewisham. The borough is home to a range of multilingual communities, some long established, others more recently arrived. Whatever the background of the youngsters on roll, the EAL team is always ready to welcome them and keen to set them on the path to achieving the highest levels of educational success they can.

The secondary EAL team is led by Ms Bauhofer, a long-standing member of staff who originally joined the predecessor school (Crofton Secondary School). She knows the local community well, having held several roles in the school over the years. This was true of other colleagues I met during my visit, including the SENCO, who had previously worked as a Learning Support Assistant and then later, as Head of EAL at the school. The professional cooperation and communication between the SEND and EAL departments is of huge benefit when staff are seeking to determine how best to support pupils who have a range of needs. Both leaders prefer the ‘helicopter’ approach to the classroom deployment, where they work with pupils learning English, those with special educational needs or disabilities, and those who are more able.

The Headteacher, Mr. Hand explained that he was proud that more experienced and advanced bilingual learners are amongst the highest performers in the school. He notes that there are fewer complete beginners and mid-term starters at the school than previously, but nevertheless, they make excellent progress.

Following a short induction, the EAL team summarises new students’ needs and abilities, circulating a list of support strategies for mainstream teachers to use. The team supports focused language development through in-class support across the curriculum, but also through targeted withdrawal. For example, the EAL support option at KS4 concentrates on preparing students for GCSE English Language papers 1 & 2, as well as addressing other aspects of cross-curricular academic language.

The students I spoke to were full of praise for the structured support they received. They commented on how the EAL staff enriched their school experience by providing spaces for private study and allowing them to borrow books of fiction, so supporting reading for pleasure.

The EAL team also arranges many high quality extracurricular activities. Five girls recently visited the House of Lords to meet Baroness Meral Hussein-Ece and Dame Floella Benjamin; Rehan Khan, author of ‘A Tudor Turk’, visited the department to discuss the creative writing process with the pupils; and BBC Africa reporter, Anne-Marie Dias Borges spoke to Year 7 pupils about the importance of having a broad language repertoire.

Indeed, the team exploits the internet to introduce their students to musicians, actors, artists and journalists from the international community. And of course, there was the hook up with Mark Ruffalo of the Marvel Avenger series!

I would like to thank the PLS EAL team.

Chiaka Amadi 5th May 2022

International Women's Day- March 8

What is International Women’s Day?

International Women's Day is a global day celebrating the achievements of women.

Often abbreviated to IWD, the day has grown since its inception and now sees significant activity worldwide, sparking debates, rallies, campaigns, celebrations and more. As well as celebrating the achievements of women and girls around the world, the day is also an important reminder of the work that is still yet to be done in pursuit of achieving gender equality.

When is International Women’s Day celebrated?

International Women’s Day was on Sunday 8th March 2026.

Officially adopted by the United Nations in 1975, the story of International Women’s Day goes back further in history. In fact, Women’s Day has been observed since the early 1900s – a time when women were starting to campaign for equal rights.

Right now, the world is benefitting from the women in history who championed and were fighting for equal gender rights and freedom. But the need to celebrate, inspire and invest in women around the world is still important, particularly because many young girls are missing out on education and experiencing gender-based violence.

Did you know? There are 129 million girls out of school because of challenges like poverty, child marriage and violence.

In March 2024, to mark International Women's Day, we visited the wonderful Baroness Meral Hussein-Ece in the House of Lords. We have also met the amazing Baroness Floella Benjamin OBE. Both incredible ladies had a very constructive chat with our students about the importance of women's participation in politics.

REFUGEE WEEK

This year’s Refugee Week took place from 15th to 21st June, centred around the powerful theme of ‘Courage’.

To mark the occasion, we arranged a fantastic series of activities and interactive lessons with collaboration of MFL, Art and Music Departments. Our students threw themselves into the sessions, actively participating and deeply enjoying the opportunity to learn, create, and reflect together.

What is Refugee Week?

Established in the UK in 1998, Refugee Week takes place every year around World Refugee Day (20th June) and has since grown into a global movement with over 2 million participants, across over 20 countries. Through an exciting programme of thousands of events, activities and media campaigns, Refugee Week brings together people from different backgrounds to connect beyond labels, and foster a deeper understanding of why people are displaced, and the challenges they face when seeking safety.

By providing a platform for people who have sought sanctuary to share their experiences, perspectives and creative work on their own terms, our vision is for refugees and asylum seekers to be able to live safely within inclusive and resilient communities, where they can continue to make meaningful contributions.

You can find more information about the Refugee Week and events here:
https://refugeeweek.org/about/

Why do we celebrate and mark the event in PLS?

PLS holds the proud distinction of being the very first secondary school in Lewisham to be officially recognised as a School of Sanctuary. This award is a deeply significant achievement for our community.

It reflects our ongoing commitment to identifying the unique needs of our refugee students and families, ensuring they receive the tailored support they deserve. This milestone was made possible entirely by the dedication of our teachers and staff, who remain the heartbeat and biggest contributors to this sanctuary culture.

In one of our key activities, students wrote inspiring messages of courage for refugee children on paper feathers, which were then added to our 'Wings of Courage' display.

Visiting Now You See Me 2nd Act film set in March 2014

We went to visit a film set... But it was not just any film set, it was Now You See Me: The 2nd Act's set! How did we get there? Our mentor and the nicest actor in the world, Mark Ruffalo had invited us.

Here’re the feedback from our students: (These students are now in their twenties 🥹)

“When I came face-to-face with Mr. Ruffalo, I was very surprised and happy. We went on the magicians' stage and saw that they used lots of dummies instead of real people to make up the audience. When I sat in between them, I was a bit scared of them! I also got to see the 360 degree camera and met with other members of the cast and crew.”- Yubing from year 7

“This trip was a lot of fun! We saw the film set. Mr. Mark Ruffalo was very friendly. I saw how they made a movie. I also met with Dave Franco, Jesse Eisenberg and Woody Harrelson. The producer, Bobby Cohen gave us all hats. I was happy and very emotional. I learned that it is hard to make films.”
Franceska from Year 8

“We had a Skype Interview with Mark Ruffalo before our Christmas Break. When I learned that I was going to see him face-to-face, I was ecstatic. I had drawn his portrait with my left hand, because I had burnt my right hand when I had tried to cook at home. I knew that it was the only chance to give it to him personally. Mark Ruffalo welcomed us and introduced us to the others. When we were on set, we also met with Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg and Dave Franco. The producer Bobby Cohen gave us Now You See Me 2nd Act Hats as a souvenir. The cameramen explained about the cameras and allowed us to try them. It was the best thing that happened to me. I learned how hard making a movie is, but everything was amazing!” Maria from Year 9

“Today we went to Excel Building to see the set of Now You See Me 2nd Act and to visit Mr. Mark Ruffalo. We saw all the cameras and different size of lenses. We met with Dave Franco, Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg and Lizzie Caplan.
Unfortunately, we could not stay there for the day, because Mr. Ruffalo had to leave earlier. However, I enjoyed our visit a lot.” - Rajiv from Year 9
