On the note of consensus- building true consensus does not come easily as it it requires the accordance of all members of a group to be truly consensual. With my group, we initially had some issues coming to a consensus, but after hearing all concerns and commentary from each member of the group, we were able to reach a consensus in our ideal situations/ thoughts.

at first, everyone in the group had a different answer regarding the selection of a module. Kirsten and i liked module 3 because of the good balance between structure and freedom, whilst noelle and anesu preferred 2 because of the writing aspect. At first we discussed why we liked each method and then discussed why not for each method as well. After 10-15 minutes of asking questions and discussing, we finally decided a hyrid of both would be the best idea.

. Finally, we evaluated Scenarios 2 and 3. After discussing them both we became undecided between the two. Both scenarios kept us on track and both had desired aspects. Scenario #2 had the creative aspect that allowed the team to have freedom in the final presentation. It also had a much needed writing portion. But it lacked the ethnographic exercises that were desired by the team. Scenario #3 seemed perfect for collaboration and ethnographic exercises, however it was also missing an important writing portion. Stuck between the two, we decided that one of the best opinions would be to modify Scenario #3 and attach, what we called, a “mini” essay. Our team felt we would love and value the outcome of a final report. The “mini” essay would allow for each member of the team to explain what they have learned throughout the project. To conclude, overall we felt that one of the better options would be to add a final report to Scenario #3.

full text from Mario

Kirsten, Anesu, Alena, Noel and I (Team Purple) started team discussion today with various opinions. After discussing the advantages and downsides of each scenario, we came to a conclusion. Our goal was to find a scenario that was not only creative, but matched what each member of the team wanted to perform in the final project. Scenario #1 was too structured and we felt that the overall assignment would not be creative enough. On the contrary, the team felt having too much creative power, like Scenario #5, would be too difficult to manage in such a short amount of time. Next, we discussed Scenario #4. Many of the team members loved and wanted the collaboration aspect of this project. However, after reviewing Scenario #4, we felt as if this scenario was not our best option to do so.

In class today we discussed our final proposed plan and met briefly with our groups to discuss the proposed plan sawa created after hearing our feedback/ preferences of the plans. I liked the proposed plan but i do feel that it will be difficult for the whole class to work/ collaborate together while we are campus. Something interesting i appreciated was the use of managerial/ higher roles/ tasks that we can sign up for. im still considering mine, its just alot of pressure to be responsible for that many people.

During this discussion we did not talk for very long because we felt that it was becoming repetitive, so we decided to discuss our projects and the proposed plan, we were in accordance with the chosen plan. we all agreed that we should have come to a consensus about the structure sooner in order to start the class earlier and not stay caught up on just the process, but actually being working!

Class today was very interesting and engaging, mainly due to the amount of participation that we had today. When the feeling of being out of place and observing and adjusting to fit in came up, many students spoke up and gave their experiences of being in this situation, including me. I really understood this because where i live now, i am a foreigner and i constantly have to be observant in order to learn and live like a brasilian. it is very difficult in some aspects, but its a great way to learn. we also introduced our observation assignment, which im really excited to do.

In class today, we did an interesting excercise where we went through different scenarios and picked the best/ most appropriate way to respond or get the information you want. We voted on our top options, and went through thoroughly why each response was appropriate or not appropriate in each circumstance. I really enjoyed this exercise because it was super engaging.
