When a child complete a skill by themselves for the first time, they look for the notion that you are proud of them and that is what I do, giving them a high five as well.

I also acknowledge to the parents what good behaviour the children had and I tell them how much I love having their child in my class.

I do not use praise if the child does not complete the skill correctly. Fake praise does not help them and instead I provide encouragement to try again.

Children deserve praise for making an attempt, and when they attempt a new skill but do not fully get it, I still tell them I am proud of them for trying.
