While the 1929 stock market crash catalyzed the Great Depression, the most significant contributing factor was a complex interplay of underlying economic weaknesses, including excessive speculation, agricultural overproduction, uneven wealth distribution, and contraction of the money supply, which, when combined with poor government policy and international trade disruptions, created a cascading effect leading to widespread economic collapse.

This is made evident through his ideals around self-reliance, his hesitancy to do anything in response to the crisis, and the effects of various tariffs he placed.

The causes of the Great Depression were very important as the stock market crash was the result of a multitude of economic problems, overproduction and underconsumption declined businesses, and Republican President’s policies such as tax cuts reduced taxes on businesses and individuals.

Limited government regulation, initiated by presidents in the 1920’s and then continued by Hoover was the most impactful cause of the Great Depression. The stock market crash was almost just as influential, hurting millions of individuals with no discrimination. Hoover’s reaction heightened the flames already burning, sparking fire to mostly the agricultural portion of the population with his new found tariffs.

The causes of the great depression had a tremendous impact on how the economy failed. The crash of the stock market was the most significant of these causes, depleting the value of goods. The most significant cause was the overproduction of goods, since companies produced so much, they weren’t able to sell anything, and since they couldn’t make profit, they couldn’t pay their workers, leading to unemployment. A less significant, but still important cause was the raising of tariffs, which worsened the economy and other countries failed to trade with the US.

The Great Depression was the culmination of multiple different factors. The biggest cause was the stock market crash, caused by investors panicking and all selling their shares at once. A secondary cause, and the thing that caused people to panic, was instability in the economy. Tariffs, failures of banks, and tight monetary policy all contributed to the stock market crash and the depression.
