Most of the time, men's sports are much bigger than the women's sports; this is because men are more athletically faster and stronger. Like most sports, the image of male volleyball players and female volleyball players are very different from each other. When people think of male volleyball players, they are thought to be like any other athlete. (They are considered as professional sports players.) However, the female athletes, especially female beach volleyball players are often seen in a sexual way; some people don't see them as athletes.

While male beach volleyball players wear T-shirts with knee-high shorts, female beach volleyball players wear bikinis. This results in female beach volleyball being much more popular than male beach volleyball because people who watch the games are attracted to the outfits and the physical appearance of the players. Although female beach volleyball is more popular, the female players aren't very happy about this because the outfits that the players wear hide the actual athletic skills of the players. Humana-Paredes, who is a Canadian beach volleyball player said that she was upset about the people who were losing respect because of the uniforms; she also said that most people didn't see how much time and sacrifice had gone into the games. However, Jackie Skender, Volleyball Canada's communication director said that the uniforms that the two genders wear are different because it's just what they wear on the beach. She claimed that there were certain reasons for the uniforms that the athletes wear, such as greater movement and no "trapping sand under fabric issues." On the other hand, Charlene Weaving, associate professor in St. Francis Xavier University said, "If the bikinis are more practical for the female athletes, it would make sense to make male athletes play in swimming suits as well."

Though the difference between the uniforms for regular volleyball is smaller than the gap between beach volleyball, there are still differences in the shorts that the men and women wear. The female volleyball players wear the same t-shirts with the male volleyball players but they wear short and very tight shorts instead of the knee-high, baggy shorts that the men wear. The reason why women wear these extremely short and tight shorts is because the shorts allow them to move more freely; they don't have to worry about their shorts touching the net or getting in the way. Also, Sepp Blatter, who was the former head of FIFA said, "Let the women play in more feminine clothes like they do in volleyball. They could, for example, have tighter shorts. Female players are pretty, if you excuse me for saying so." On the other hand, there are people, especially parents who feel uncomfortable about letting their daughters play sports in tight shorts. A father said that when his daughter wanted to buy the volleyball shorts, he refused to buy them because he thought that the shorts were bikini bottoms, not an athletic gear. In addition, Laura Witteman, who coaches the boys and girls teams at St. Joseph High School in Westchester and co-owns the Ignite Volleyball Club, thinks that there isn't an advantage; she says that she played in regular shorts in college and had no problems.

There are both men's and women's volleyball games. However, women's volleyball is found much more popular than the men's. It is often phrased as a 'girl's sport', and this is because there are originally more opportunities to play and learn volleyball for female compared to male in their childhood, i.e. there are only organised teams for females in high school and college.

It is said that women's NCAA volleyball is much bigger than its male counterpart. In 2014, there were 334 women's teams while there were only 23 men's teams. The gap between the number of teams results in a difference between the scholarship money; schools can offer up to 12 scholarships for women but only 4.5 for men. According to the statistics from Athnet, there are about 1,340 female volleyball programs in the United States while there are only 88 programs for the male players. Therefore, it is clearly shown that volleyball is more of a female sport than a male sport.

As mentioned above, women's volleyball, including beach volleyball is more popular than the men's, which contribute to the difference in the salaries between the two genders. Also, there are more fans and sponsors who want to support the women's teams rather than the men's teams. For instance, the female players, such as Kim Yeon-Kyeong, gets paid 1.2M€ while male players, such as Matthew Anderson gets paid 500,000€.

Since both girls and boys play volleyball in CI, I think that there isn't a problem with volleyball in our school. The popularity level of volleyball in our school is similar between the two genders and students don't get paid for playing volleyball. In addition, students don't advertise for a certain brand or company and they don't make endorsement deals. The only minor problem is the uniform of the students, but if female players want to wear PE shorts for their practices because they feel uncomfortable, they will be able to do that. Other than that, I don't think that girls volleyball is more popular than boys volleyball. Therefore, I don't think that there is a serious problem at CI that is related to the gender issues in volleyball.
