I was surprised at the themes found throughout all of my five sources. Most of the themes were heavy and complex. Teenagers had access to themes such as politics, death, love, and sexuality from different sources. Some literary sources had a purpose of helping teenagers navigate these complex issues while other sources helped teenagers not feel alone.

My second take away was that the variety of sources require students to use a number of comprehension strategies to access the information or comprehend the narratives being presented.  In order to listen with purpose to music and podcasts, teenagers must be able to make connections, understand point of view and visualize.  While reading magazines and books, students must understand the text structure and features to make sense of what is being presented. Students need to learn how to ask insightful questions, interpret analogies, and understand difficult vocabulary words.

My last major take away is more a wondering.  I wonder how teenagers of different ages, races and genders connect to these sources.  Do they read Seventeen Magazine and Teen Vogue and then look in the mirror and feel good about themselves or do they wonder why they do not look like the celebrities in all of the photos.  Are teenagers as egocentric as the kindergartners I teach? And if not, do they find comfort in the connections they can make with the story teller of a podcast or with a character from The Beauty That Remains?]]> 2019-02-05 23:11:32 UTC https://padlet.com/valerie_nezvesky/xk4979rcpkgq/wish/328058647 valerie_nezvesky https://padlet.com/valerie_nezvesky/xk4979rcpkgq/wish/328060592 In order to use the literary sources available to teenagers and the ones they are most engaged in, teachers need to help make the content accessible. 

There is a plethora of literary materials for students of all ages and walks of life.  Teachers can help their students find a source that interests them.  When a student is motivated and engaged they will be more likely to read or listen. These sources also cover such a wide range of difficult topics that it helps teachers put someone else's work into a student's hand to help support them without having to say the "wrong" thing or get too involved in a student's personal drama (especially if it's just that, teenage drama).

Teachers also need to develop a rapport built on trust, honesty and compassion with their students.  The themes found in so many sources are complex but it helps students that are navigating difficult times in their own lives.  Lesko's introduction to Troubling Teenagers, touches on four historical characterizations of teenagers.  Although these characterizations may be exaggerated from scholarly work for many years, authors seem to focus on these characterizations while producing material for teenagers to read.  Topics such as dating, being confident, and peer pressure are embedded within most literary sources.  When teachers are sensitive to a teenager's problems and needs, it helps build a stronger relationship which in turns helps students (and teachers) be more successful in the classroom.

Middle school and high school teachers need to help students develop the comprehension skills necessary to understand the literary devices embedded in the sources.  Students need to be able to use text structures to support their comprehension, ask questions to sort through murky "facts" or "news" and make connections with the narrator or story tellers. 

After becoming immersed in teenage pop culture and reading Proficient Reading In School by O'Brien et al., I also think teachers need to think about how their literacy instruction meets the "depth and breadth" necessary for teens to navigate sophisticated texts in their world and how classroom assessments can measure what students are already doing.  If this is the literary sources students are reading naturally, assessments should reflect these products.  Instead of reading a book whole class and giving a multiple choice assessment, teach students about the format of a podcast.  Have them research a topic they are passionate in and produce their own podcast as a PSA for teenagers.  This type of assessment requires so many embedded literacy tasks but it is engaging and relevant.  

Ultimately, I think teachers need to meet teens where they are.  Use their interests and themes of life to bring literary sources to them.  Use these sources to teach the CCSS and move from "print-centric to media-centric notions of literate competence (O'Brien et al. 94). ]]> 2019-02-05 23:23:13 UTC https://padlet.com/valerie_nezvesky/xk4979rcpkgq/wish/328060592
