Piagets theory is often described as a stage theory, consisting of four stages of cognitive development: Sensorimotor, Preoperational, Concrete Operational, and Formal Operational. While Piaget focused primarily on childhood development, he acknowledged that cognitive development continues throughout life, but the stages he defined are typically completed by adolescence.
