The exposition introduces Robert Proctor, who is skillfully driving his mother down a turnpike on a sunny spring morning. The rising action details the events following a blue convertible crashing into Proctor. As he struggles to regain control of his car, his mother starts to scream, and Proctor finds his car driving towards oncoming traffic. In the climax of the story, Proctor sees the car he is about to collide with. He is upset to see a young girl asleep in the car. The world then goes grey as the cars collide, and Proctor hears his mother's scream mix with a softer, shorter scream, presumably from the young girl. The falling action starts as Proctor wakes up to a man in a blue uniform who tells him what he experienced was simulated as part of a driving test. The man informs Proctor he has passed the test, and instructs him to sign a form and pay a fee to get his licence. Proctor follows as instructed, and the story is concluded as two men in white uniforms show up. They tell Proctor he is mentally ill for being willing to drive after what he experienced, and drag him away to be "treated," ending the story.

Atmosphere:
Throughout the story, I got different vibes from the writing, which affected how I felt throughout the story. The story started with a calm and upbeat atmosphere as it talked about a relaxed drive on a cool morning. When the conflict was introduced, and Proctor's car started going out of control, the story had a much more frantic and terrifying feeling. When Proctor wakes up, the atmosphere becomes more calm as we learn that the crash was all a dream, but takes a turn for the mysterious as Proctor is dragged away for medical treatment.

Characterization:
The story contains examples of both direct and indirect characterizations. The most prominent example of direct characterization is at the beginning of the story where it is said "Robert Proctor was a good driver for so young a man." This characterization explains Proctor's calm and confident attitude towards driving, which could also be seen as a characterization. It is also mentioned in the story that Proctor is proud of a tune-up he performed on his engine. It can be inferred from this explicit detail, that Proctor likes cars and driving, which would further fit in with the positive atmosphere, touched upon earlier. Furthermore, this trait could've influenced Proctor's decision accept his licence, which caused the men in white uniforms to conclude he was insane, and take him away (an inference.)
This characterization clarifies a character's motive
