I think this is my comfort area. I differentiate the math stations all of the time. Giving choice and voice provides individualized learning for students. I do these by giving free choice when students choose books for reader's workshop but define the limits (5 finger rule, reading levels). It's easy to implement in Writer's workshop by introducing the writing skill but giving freedom of the topic.

Last year, I tried to make my classroom as personalized as I could. Within each station, there were at least 5 different choices for them to chose from. During their independent reading time they had free choice over what they wanted to read - poems, snap word cards, leveled books, free choice books from the classroom library or their school library book. During writing time, they chose their topic and type of book. I had a goal folder for each child where they would put a sticker for each goal they met so they knew exactly what they had accomplished and what goals they wanted to meet next.

My stations have different levels of activities for each skill. Some stations are harder than others. They start with the easier ones and work their way up to the harder ones.

Students evaluate their own writing and set goals then evaluate their progress. Students decide what they are going to learn, how they will learn it and how they will show their learning. I had a pair of students who learned together how to find the volume of three-dimensional geometric shapes. They thought they developed a new formula to find the volume, but sadly, my math skills aren't up to par to validate the new formula.

I use preassessments and data to groups students by need. I tailor the instruction and activities based on their needs. The assignments are tiered and choices are provided within some of the stations.

Beasley. I've largely done with with a self-paced physics class. They get the materials--a set of presentations, exercises, etc. They don't have to use those. The content is S&S driven, there's a quiz as a self-check and something summative. At one point, about half the units had a project or a test--still not quite personalized, but getting there.

Beasley. Differentiation in my usual class takes the the form of small-group instruction after a quiz or test for those who didn't get it. In a more recent class, it takes the form of content-rich instruction + exercises that focus content to what's required, then quizzes and tests that aim for just what's required. It requires that students be able to ignore the "nice to knows" early on and focus on the "need to knows", but that varies by student and by unit.

As for the Writer's Workshop, students choose topics to write about. We also confer and set goals. After students take a CCA, they reflect on their strengths and weaknesses and set goals, as well.

Differentiation was my main approach the last decade or so I was in the classroom. Students were flexibly grouped and rotated through tiered stations, including a teacher station. Design was based loosely on tests and MAP RIT scores since instruction was still in groups, albeit small groups.

I have not done true personalization as described in Bray's Teaching and Learning Approaches Chart. The descriptors for personalization emphasize so much student metacognition and maturity --making considered choices, having academic passions, being self-aware enough to select appropriate learning tools based on needs rather than on what a friend is doing, building a network of peers and mentors, co-designing assignments -- it sounds daunting when you are looking at seven-year- olds. Baby steps I guess.

I think that choice boards fit somewhat under this category--where kids can decide how to show their learning and possibly relating to their interests, etc. I think I have also managed to get to this category by doing a RAFT activity which the kids really liked because their learning really was up to them, there was so much freedom. It was one of my favorite "lessons" of the year!

I think I do this the most. This category is not what I thought it would be. I feel like individualized learning according to this chart fits into regular-old teacher-led classrooms where I do everything and the kids soak it up. I'm guilty of doing this because of time constraints and ease (I'm going into only year 2 of intermediate teaching!). Then you have actual individualization for kids with 504s or IEPs. This chart really surprised me. I think most of what I thought was personalization is actually differentiation.

Personalized learning was when I gave my students the choice based on their capabilities. The students would chose the means to review or do the work. This method was not used as much because only a few students would choose to do something different. This year I had one SPED kid and one GT student who were the only ones that would love to take the risk with a personalized setting they would choose.

I have had students in different small groups to learn different things. During one unit I noticed that there was a severe gap in a group of students learning that prevented them from getting the new material. I had to have them work on a different assignment for a few days as I went through and retaught what they were missing to understand the new material.

I had a students who couldn't read or write. I set up a google account where he could use the speech to text tools and the readwrite app to help him read. I also set up a RazKids account at a beginner level so when everyone else was independently reading at their own levels so was this kid. This gave him so much confident, by the time we had to stay home because of Covid he had improved so much. I had several students this way, which I had to individualize their learning to give them confidence when they were successful. Others needed to answer verbally, or by drawing out their responds. We would also review individual goals weekly to make sure students would accomplish their goals.

Using team projects that have an outline of what is expected and let the team members choose how to solve the problem using their gifts and talents. While they work, I listen and watch to see who's on track and who's not, to help them or to compliment their work. They sometimes get upset b/c I wouldn't have an example for them to see what the product might look like. They were told to read the directions and see what their team devises, knowing that there were many ways to reach a quality end result. A hook is used in the beginning to catch their attention and there is a connection/comparison to what they are doing and how it may tie to real life. I love watching them work out the situation and enjoy their productions. Their work is a true reflection of who each of them are and what they bring to the team. By recognizing who needs modifications, what ieps are involved and what languages are to be considered, each student is recognized and has the opportunity to stretch their learning by using strategies they are comfortable with, as well as trying new strategies. I use this more when I pull students into homeroom time for small group or one on one instruction based on current data than I do during class every day. Again, another area where I would like to do better.

Of all the ways presented here this is where I am weakest. I have not managed to figure out how to individualize learning, maintain classroom management, and have a cohesive unit/lesson yet.
