During their independent reading time they had free choice over what they wanted to read - poems, snap word cards, leveled books, free choice books from the classroom library or their school library book. During writing time, they chose their topic and type of book. I had a goal folder for each child where they would put a sticker for each goal they met so they knew exactly what they had accomplished and what goals they wanted to meet next. </div>]]></description>

         <title>Beasley. Differentiation in my usual class takes the the form of small-group instruction after a quiz or test for those who didn&#39;t get it. In a more recent class, it takes the form of content-rich instruction + exercises that focus content to what&#39;s required, then quizzes and tests that aim for just what&#39;s required. It requires that students be able to ignore the &quot;nice to knows&quot; early on and focus on the &quot;need to knows&quot;, but that varies by student and by unit.</title>

The descriptors for personalization emphasize so much student metacognition and maturity --<em>making considered choices, having academic passions, being self-aware enough to select appropriate learning tools based on needs rather than on what a friend is doing, building a network of peers and mentors, co-designing assignments</em> -- it sounds daunting when you are looking at seven-year- olds. Baby steps I guess.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>I think that choice boards fit somewhat under this category--where kids can decide how to show their learning and possibly relating to their interests, etc.  I think I have also managed to get to this category by doing a RAFT activity which the kids really liked because their learning really was up to them, there was so much freedom.  It was one of my favorite "lessons" of the year!</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>I think I do this the most.  This category is not what I thought it would be.  I feel like individualized learning according to this chart fits into regular-old teacher-led classrooms where I do everything and the kids soak it up.  I'm guilty of doing this because of time constraints and ease (I'm going into only year 2 of intermediate teaching!).  Then you have actual individualization for kids with 504s or IEPs.  This chart really surprised me.  I think most of what I thought was personalization is actually differentiation.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>I had a students who couldn't read or write.  I set up a google account where he could use the speech to text tools and the readwrite app to help him read. I also set up a RazKids account at a beginner level so when everyone else was independently reading at their own levels so was this kid.  This gave him so much confident, by the time we had to stay home because of Covid he had improved so much.  I had several students this way, which I had to individualize their learning to give them confidence when they were successful.  Others needed to answer verbally, or by drawing out their responds.  We would also review individual goals weekly to make sure students would accomplish their goals.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Using team projects that have an outline of what is expected and let the team members choose how to solve the problem using their gifts and talents.  While they work, I listen and watch to see who's on track and who's not, to help them or to compliment their work.  They sometimes get upset b/c I wouldn't have an example for them to see what the product might look like.  They were told to read the directions and see what their team devises, knowing that there were many ways to reach a quality end result.  A hook is used in the beginning to catch their attention and there is a connection/comparison to what they are doing and how it may tie to real life.  I love watching them work out the situation and enjoy their productions.  Their work is a true reflection of who each of them are and what they bring to the team.  This also lets everyone learn while, reading, listening, speaking, writing and thinking.  &lt;3<br><br></div>]]></description>

When I think of individualized learning, I think of students with accommodations either through aa 504 or just teacher given.  Our goal as teachers is to reach all students, not only our low babies, that need the teacher all the time.  Our high kiddos also need us.          <description><![CDATA[<div>I feel like some aspects of personalized learning were utilized during our distance learning in the spring.  Students all had access to the material given by the district, but they could choose how they wanted to see it.  We had multiple live zoom sessions daily, slide decks, extra practice, and they could choose how they wanted to submit it to me.  I won't say that it was a true personalized learning experience, but it definitely had some characteristics. </div>]]></description>
