Consider that the size and type of trash you want to remove and base your design off of that.

For example, if you want to remove small microplastics, you will want a trash collector device that can capture tiny particles (so perhaps some kind of fine mesh net). However you test, ask yourself: "did it capture trash?", "did my design stay together or fall apart in the water?", "how can I grab more trash or different types of trash?"

1. You could test it in a bathtub, baby pool, or other tub that you fill with water. Once it's full enough, add some pieces of trash from your recycling bin and see how your design works out. This might get messy but it is maximum fun! 

2. You could also test using a dry method. Simply put trash from your recycling bin out on pavement or backyard (safe space you can clean!), and then use your device to pick up the trash. 

3. What else could you do to test our your design? The handle is made is made from a metal barbaque scuwer and I put some tin-foil around the bottom so it did not hurt you. This trash collector is best for micro plastic but it can also be use for bigger plastic.
