The SAMR Model is used to transform learning into digital learning. It is divided into four levels: Substitution, Augmentation, Modification, and Redefinition. The goal is to teach above the line, meaning starting at the modification level, with the intent to teach the redefinition level. At the Redefinition level, students are expected to create a new product infusing various tools of technology and having it available for others, outside of the classroom, to view and/ or evaluate.

SAMR allows you to enhance the way students learn by giving them the freedom to learn through interactions with their peers. The awesome outcome is that students walk away with a wealth of knowledge and new ideas to add to the information that they have gained from the activity.
Shannon Summerville
Kecia Chapman

Any using any kind of technology in class, task design is critical. The tech tool MUST fit the learning task.
Using the SAMR model to integrate tech allows teachers to be true facilitators. It calls for a laser-like focus from the teacher to keep "next-steps" in mind to enhance and transform lessons and engagement. The class focus then becomes on student-driven versus teacher-centered. SAMR Model will also transform the way teachers do formative assessments. Students can now create and produce reaching more levels of Bloom's. This results in higher student achievement.

The four levels of learning are substitution, augmentation, modification and redefinition. Even though all four levels may be incorporated into a lesson, higher levels of involvement and learning are at the modification and redefinition levels. The integration of learning leads to improving student success.
