This is after we are introduced to Dill. While his friend, Jem is striking a match under a turtle, Dill empathizes with it, thinking that it is wrong. Here, the readers compare the two characters, Jem and Dill. Jem, who doesn't see anything wrong with the situation, and Dill, who does not want to harm the turtle. "Dill was in hearty agreement with this plan of action. Dill was becoming something of a trial anyway, following Jem about. He had asked me earlier in the summer to marry him, then he promptly forgot about it. He stalked me out, marked me as his property, said I was the only girl he would ever love, then he neglected me. " (Lee 55). 
Dill asks his friend to marry him, calling him a girl, then forgets about him. What this says about Dill is that he is a confident boy with an active imagination, as shown in this scenario. There he would stand, his arm around the fat pole, staring and wondering," (Lee 10).  
This quote clearly illustrates Dill's curiosity of the Radley Place to the readers. He is entranced by it. Even though he is warned not to go near, no one can stop him from wandering towards it. He has a strange fascination with the Radley Place, and he wants to explore even if it puts him at risk. -White is associated with innocence and purity, in which describes Dill in some aspects. He is a naive boy, who spends the summer in Maycomb, and is not familiar with the in and outs of the town. 

"'I'll think I'll be a clown when I get grown,' said Dill. 
Jem and I stopped in our tracks.
'Yes sir, a clown,' he said, "there ain't one thing in this world I can do about folks except laugh, so I'm gonna join the circus and laugh my head off.'
'You got it backwards, Dill,' said Jem. 'Clowns are sad, it's folks that laugh at them.' (Lee 289)

-This conversation paints the image of a sad clown that symbolically represents Dill, as because he was upset because of the trial he believes that being a clown would bring him happiness. As a young, naive child, he wants to think that being a clown and laughing would help him not feel sad because all he would have to do is laugh.
