I chose this color because historically it was a rare color associated with power and hierarchy. I think that the author emphasizes that a student’s identity is one of the most important things teachers should highlight to enrich their education. Purple is powerful, and student’s identities are powerful in crafting their individual educational approaches.

Red

I chose red for two reasons: red is often the color of pen annotations that mark incorrectness or wrongness, which has historically been a negative way of addressing skill deficits. On the other hand, red is a color associated with power and determination, which learning new skills can provide.

I chose the color black because it represents how parts of a person’s identity could be seen in such a negative light, but at the same time, those same aspects of a person’s identity could be something that is so powerful—such as a person’s race or ethnicity. Black folks can be seen as being very dangerous, loud, ghetto, or inferior. Still, at the same time, Black folks are seen as powerful and highly intelligent due to the many obstacles they must overcome to “prove themselves” as worthy.

When I think of reflections, I think of its literal imagery– like looking into the water and studying yourself. Understanding your own identity, including others, requires significant self reflection and internal conversations. I also believe the end goal of self discovery should be peace, which is also associated with this serene blue.

I chose pink because with the reclaiment of marginalized groups with literacy. Connecting to pink I see reclaiment in my personal identity, Womanhood and how this color creates biases but I see it as a way to reclaim that energy.
