During WW1 Quakers acted as stretcher-bearers and some went to treat the wounded on both sides in No-Man’s land between the trenches.

During WW2 they were part of the Friends Ambulance Unit to help provide medical support

He was awarded the Nobel Peace Price in 1964 and was selected by Time magazine as its Man of the Year. His “I Have a Dream” speech, which is now considered to be among the great speeches of American history, is frequently quoted. His success in galvanizing the drive for civil rights, however, made him the target of conservative segregationists who believed firmly in the superiority of the white race and feared social change.

He was arrested over 20 times and his home was bombed. Ultimately, he was assassinated on April 4, 1968, on the balcony of a motel where he was staying in Memphis.

Never again War!’ He has spoken strongly against the use of unnecessary force and has urged people to pray for peace.

However he does not take a purely pacifist stance. He does agree that there are times when force has to be used e.g. for self defence or to defend the weak, but he says that the force must be of a limited nature. He is supported by Catholic teaching:

“The church strives for peace but does not preach radical pacifism”
