The first stage of Erikson's theory starts when the baby is born up until a little after the baby's first birthday. This is where they are leaning to trust the people around them, especially their family. When I was 2, I fell and busted my face off of the corner of a coffee table. My parents picked me up, cleaned by eyebrow up, and put a bandage on it. They cared for me and babied me after I had gotten hurt. I cried into them and laid with them. This shows that I had trusted them when I was hurt.

The second stage of Erikson's theory starts at 18 months until they are 3 years old. This stage is where the toddler is learning all new things, especially being independent and doing things on their own. They can choose for themselves and would rather do things on their own like put their own shoes on. When I was a toddler, I was an independent toddler when it came to cleaning. I would pick up my own toys by myself, which was the way I liked to do. Surprisingly, that is how I am today. I am a one person type of cleaning.

The third stage of Erikson's theory starts when the child is 3 and ends when they are 5. These years are round about the age of preschool years. This is where they learn that they can control what happens while learning to play with others. They learn to stand up for themselves and develop a sense of self-confidence and a purpose. While I would be at my younger cousins house while her mom was watching us, she was stingy over her toys and book. So when I would try to read her books, she would bite me and then take her books away. I learned to just ask if I can read a book, and that ended me in not getting bit.

The fourth stage of Erikson's theory starts when the child goes into elementary school years. In these years, they learn many new things and expand their likes and influences. There are many different factors that enter the child's life at this point. You have school every week, meeting new people, schedules, and learning many new things. When I was in elementary school, I remember playing sports. Volleyball was my strength, basketball was my weakness. I realized that I was not as good at basketball as I was at volleyball, so I decided to just focus on volleyball and quit basketball.

The fifth stage of Erikson's theory starts when the child is 12 and ends when they are reaching adulthood at 18. This is where your young adult finds who they are and what they want to do with their life. They start asking themselves who they are, what they want to be, and what they want to do. When I was in high school, I was torn between wanting to work in the medical field and wanting to work with kids. I took a vocational class at a local school and went with early childhood education. I thought to myself, which job best describes me and my interests? I came to the conclusion that it was kids. I have always had a fond love for kids (especially since I have been babysitting since I was 15.) I knew that working with kids was what I wanted to do with my life.

The sixth stage of Erikson's theory starts at the young adult age of 18 and ends around 40 years old. This stage is about sharing your life with a significant other. This forms sage, love filled relationships. But this stage can only start if you have managed to find yourself in the last stage. If you haven't found yourself out, then this stage will fail until you do. You cannot love someone else unless you love yourself first. For myself, I am 20 years old. I am currently living with my parents with no boyfriend. I am still figuring myself out and going to school for education. This is also totally okay. I am figuring myself out before I dive deep into a relationship with another person.

The seventh stage of Erikson's theory starts at the age of 40 and ends around 65 years old. This stage is where you are feeling the need to show love to others. This age is where you are raising your children or even grandchildren. Needing to help and show love to everyone around you, especially your family. Although I am not quite at this age, my parents are. I strive to be like them when I get older and have my own kids. They are always doing the best for me and my siblings. They make sure we are safe, have everything we need, and are just always there for us. I am beyond blessed to have them.

The eighth stage, the last and final step of Erikson's theory starts when you are over the age of 65 years old. This is when you take a step back from work and retire. Where you soak in the times with family and friends without working. Where you look back at all the good times in your life that you have made happen and achieved. Once again, I am not at this age yet. But I aspire to be like my grandmother. She soaks in all the moments with her kids and grandkids. Although she still works, she still looks back at all of her achievements and things she has created in her life with awe. My family would not be here if it was not for her and I thank God every day for her.
