What Drives the Character(s) to think, feel, and/or act the way they do?

1.)Delia acts the way she does throughout the story because of how the town and Sykes treat her. The town is constantly gossiping about Delia and Sykes. Sykes has a past of abuse and violence with Delia, and thats why Delia is so upset and reserved. Delia lives a life full of fear because she never knows when Sykes might beat her or scare her.

How do the details in the text convey or reveal one or more aspects of a setting?

2.)The details in the text reveal multiple aspects of a setting by providing the readers with information that will aid in creating that mental picture. Details like the way they travel or how they talk can give readers a visual of what time period the story is taking place in. One example in "Sweat" would be when the narrator says "but wondering through it all where Sykes, her husband, had gone with her horse and buckboard." We can determine from this quote that the story takes place in the 18th century when buckboards were used.

3.) The setting affects the readers of the text by making them feel a certain way about the characters. The setting is described as being very eerie and sad. It gives off an unsettling feel with it, and that is going to affect how the readers read and feel about the text. This setting emphasizes how bad Delia was treated and what she had to live through.

How does the particular sequence of events and the manner in which a text presents those events to a reader affect a reader's experience with the text?

4.) By starting off the text with Delia describing how she washes the clothes followed by her being scared by sykes hooks in readers. If the story started off with just her killing Sykes no one would feel bad for her or understand why she did what she did. However the author starts it off by showing all the ways Sykes mistreated her and how the town treated her. This sequence of events makes readers feel bad for Delia and angry at Sykes for not getting any punishment for what he does to Delia.

Who is the narrator of the text? What details convey that?

5.) The narrator of the story is believed to possibly be Delias child that lives in the house with the couple. The story is told from a person that knows a lot about the couple and majority of this story is told from the home. Throughout "Sweat" the narrator says "she came home" and when the narrator says "most of the men left also" it gives the impression that whoever the narrator is lives at the house otherwise why wouldn't they leave with the other people. When it says "she came home" it makes it seem as though the narrator may be her child waiting for her inside or even just someone living in the house.

How does the narrator's distance from the events of a narrative affect the details and information presented to the reader?

6.) The narrators distance from the events makes the information a little more believable. If all of the information was coming from just Delia or just Sykes it would be a completely one sided story. However since this information is coming from an outsiders point of view we can assume this is pretty reliable information.
