Paragraph This symbol is a part of the book because it shows Hester’s dishonor to her fellow Puritans. It brings a greater meaning because it shows the beginning of her journey towards finding innocence. In order for her to save her soul, she must first stand on the scaffold to feel the weight of her “taint of deepest sin in the sacred quality of human life.”(page 54). The scaffold’s symbolism adapts as the plot moves on. At first, it outcasts Hester, but towards the end of the book, it shows a getaway, emancipating Dimmesdale from his suffering. Its main meaning changes from shame to liberty. Dimmesdale was free from the “great horror of the mind, as if the universe were gazing at a scarlet token on his naked breast, right over his heart." (page 144). Dimmesdale tells Hester and Pearl “even though he didn't stand up with them during the first scaffold scene”, to come up once again, and they will stand there together. Dimmesdale promises Pearl that “someday he will confess his part of the ‘sin" that involved Hester to the Puritan society.

Hester Prynne has to stand on the scaffold then encounter two men who ruined her life as a woman and as a wife. She also encouners them during the second scaffold scene where she meets he same two men in private. This shows that the scaffold represents a stage where the main characters such as Hester, Dimmesdale, and Chillingworth to profess their truth. Also, the scaffold gives the main characters a place to confess their sins in private, especially at night.
