Neptune is the 8th planet from the sun. It is blue and made of gases and clouds. Inside it has a rocky core. The rocky core is made of ice and gas. It also has 13 moons and thin rings. They are made of dust. It moves by revolving around the sun and rotates on its axis. Neptune has a thin atmosphere. It also has geysers! That's pretty cool! If Neptune battled Earth, Neptune would win in size. About 60 Earths could fit in Neptune! That's cool. Also, the Hubble Space Telescope can take pictures of Neptune oohhhhh -snap!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Neptune takes 164 years to go around the sun. That's a little weird!????????????????????????????
Neptune's atmosphere is mostly hydrogen, helium and methane. Methane gas makes it look blue.

Mercury is a rocky ball with craters. It is mostly made of rock and looks like a rocky ball covered with craters.
Mercury has a GIANT crater on it called Caloris Basin. Mercury has a solid core made of iron. The core takes up most of the planet actually. Mercury's crust is covered with cliffs , hills, and lots of craters.
Mercury revolves around the sun it also rotates slowly. Mercury can move in two different ways... #1 it circles around the sun and also spins on its axis. It takes 88 Earth days to circle the sun, it takes 59 Earth days for Mercury to spin on its axis. In 1974 a spacecraft called Mariner took pictures of Mercury. That's pretty cool! Mercury is also the 8th largest planet in the solar system.
Mercury has no atmosphere, gases around Mercury escape all the way into space. It's hot during the day on Mercury , also it's surface is cold at night. Mercury and Earth are really different from each other. People can't breathe on Mercury, but on Earth people can breathe.

Venus is the hottest planet in the Solar System. It is the second planet from the sun. Mercury is closer, while Earth and Mars are farther away. Venus has a core, mantle and crust on the inside. Venus's core is made of iron and nickel. A rocky mantle lies above the core. Some volcanoes on Venus have tops that look like pancakes. The tops may have formed from extra thick lava. Venus revolves as it rotates around the sun. Venus circles around the sun while it spins on its axis. Venus circles the sun in 225 Earth days. Venus has a very thick atmosphere. An atmoshere is the layer of gases that surround the planet. Venus and Earth are both rocky planets. But Venus is very different. People could not live on Venus. Venus is bright in the night sky. The planet is easy to see from Earth. People also use telescopes to get a closer look at the planet. Venus's air pressure is 90 times greater that Earth's. It could crush a soda can instantly. Because of Venus's slow, backward spin, 2 days (sunrise to sunset) pass each time Venus spins around once. The first color pictures of Venus's Surface were taken in 1982. The Soviet Union's Venera 13 spacecraft took the pictures when it landed on Venus.

Mars is the fourth planet from the sun. It is a rocky planet with dry dusty land. It has volcanoes, canyons and ice at its poles. It is also made of red dust, dirt, iron and mountains. The iron in the dust and dirt give Mars its red color. Mars has 2 moons called Phobos and Deimos. The moons have many craters. Mars spins on its axis. It almost spins as fast as Earth. The planet takes 24 hours and 37 minutes for one rotation. Mars circles the sun slower than Earth. Mars takes 687 Earth days to travel once around the sun. Mars has a thin atmosphere made mostly of carbon dioxide.
Scientists learn about Mars by sending spacecrafts to the planet. In 2004, two robots explored Mars, they were names Spirit and Opportunity. If you compare Mars to Earth, in Mars people could not breathe, but on Earth they can. Also, Mars is too cold to live on, but Earth has temperatures the people can live in. It is amazing but true that Mars has the largest known canyon in the solar system. Scientists believe that flowing water shaped parts of the canyon long ago. Some fun facts are that Mars has spring, summer, autumn and winter, and they each last about 6 Earth months. In July 1997, the Sojourner Rover explored Mars. This robot was the first moving vehicle to land on another planet. Giant dust storms sometimes cover Mars and last for many months.

Saturn has rings that are pieces of rock and ice.
And did you know that Saturn has 33 moons? Titan is Saturn's biggest moon, it is bigger than Mercury and Pluto. Saturn's atmosphere has many clouds and strong winds.
Saturn spins quickly on it's axis as it moves around the sun. The planet completes one spin every 10 hours and 45 minutes.
In 1980 Voyager 1 flew by Saturn. The spacecraft took pictures of this planet. Scientists found new moons too.

Uranus a blue gas giant. It is made of methane gas. that is what makes it blue. Uranus has 27 moons and 11 rings. Uranus does not have a solid surface like Earth. Most of Uranus is a soupy layer of ice and gases. The core that is deep inside the planet is rock and ice.
Uranus moves by rotating as it revolves. it is the only planet that rotates on its side. They think that something may have smashed into Uranus to make it spin that way. One day on Uranus takes 17 Earth hours and one year is 84 Earth years to go around the sun once.
Uranus was named after a ancient Greek goddess. Uranus has clouds and it was the first planet to be seen with a telescope. All the others closer to the sun were discovered without telescopes. Uranus is the seventh planet from the sun.

Jupiter is the fifth planet from the sun. Did you know it is also a gas giant like Saturn, Neptune and Uranus?

You might think this is crazy but all the color on Jupiter is just orange and white clouds! MIND BLOWING right!

If all that color is just clouds, and the atmosphere is made of gases and ice, then Jupiter is just a rocky core!? That's why it's a gas giant. So all that gas makes it the biggest planet. Also, all that gas makes it so big that more than 1,300 Earths could fit inside Jupiter... NOW THAT'S BIG!

I wish I could live on Jupiter because I would not have to go to school for sooo long, because on Jupiter days are only 9 hours and 55 minutes, so school could be like only 3 hours! Also you would get to live longer because when you're 11 on Jupiter you would only be 1 years old! YAY- YOU COULD LIVE LONGER!!!!!!!!
