The first thing I can recall buying for myself is a pair of royal blue 1s. This was when I was around 13 and I had saved the money while working for my mom's business. Those shoes were most likely not the first thing I ever bought but they were definitely one of my first big purchases. I felt good that I was able to make the purchase, but I sort of regret spending so much money on shoes over the years. I always had a liking towards flashy clothing but feel bad because I know I'm contributing towards some very ugly things.

I found it very interesting that I did not realize this passage was discussing American culture until the class discussion. It was very cool to see how the description caused the attributes to totally slip my mind. This was a great description of Americans to anyone who is foreign to this country, and also to give American's sort of a different view on our culture.

When I was younger my family was very poor to which the elders hid well. There were a few staple meals in my household that I consider having held us together. My favorite of them was a dish made with hotdogs and eggs. Growing up I thought this was a normal breakfast for everyone but in school I quickly learned that I ate this because I was less fortunate. What you bring to school when you are young has a large effect on your popularity and since I often had nothing or school lunch I was among kids of similar backgrounds. This truly put life into perspective for me at a young age and forced me to realize the reality of my situation as well as others around me.

What I've noticed as I read this passage is that the research has to be very specific. They all rely on some natural action or feeling of human beings. What we find important will affect how we see the world and how we will react to certain research questions and methods. Thus, so the methods must reach a person on an intimate level and make them wish to share.

I found this particular matter interesting because I am the child of an ex-convict. Growing up with them was extremely hard and I've experienced things that most adults will never know. Yet I don't look at them ant different than any other human on this earth. It was very common when i was young for people to bring it up to me most commonly teachers and administrators in my schools. It was strange having everyone constantly in my business, but it became to be part of my norm. Despite all of the adversity I faced I never looked at my parent differently. Watching my parent struggle with jobs and not being able to go places with me due to legal restraints only made me appreciate and value my freedom more.

I guess i would say the material item that is most significant to my sense of self would be my clothing. I want to always look presentable, and I guess that is slightly due to what I think others will think of me. My mom would always lecture me and all my siblings about always being "presentable" and "clean". This was definitely instilled in me from a very young age. When I was younger, I always wanted more popular and flashy things but thankfully my parents never bought it. If I wanted something expensive, I would have to buy it with my own money. This led me thrifting a lot of my clothing and buying things that I thought was nice regardless of the brand name. I do own some brand name things but since I buy a lot of my clothing and shoes second hand i don't think I've contributed much to the brand's value.

In my opinion everyone is guilty of wearing a mask in front of the world. Everyone presents himself in a certain way through speech, clothing, and behavior in order to give others a good perception. In certain audiences a person will naturally behave different than in others. People do all this to control the way they are perceived and create and identity that aligns with common values in society.

I feel like the hardest part of handling the dead would just be facing all of the emotions that comes along with it. I feel the task is very significant and it is important to provide respect to the life you are setting to rest.

This discussion in class was equally and interesting as it was surprising. It was insane that so many people would essentially murder just because a figure of authority said it was necessary. It was also interesting to see how little people raised their hands when asked if they would murder for the same stakes as the people in the experiment.

Shopping for "we-ness"

I can't really think of anything I've purchased that would be considered a "we-ness" buy. I usually purchase what I like or what I think will look good on me or in my room. I guess out of everything I own my shoe collection would fit into this category the best. I do not think having it necessarily makes me more popular or likable, but I do receive occasional compliments.

Chapter 3 Fast Food/ Work and Economy

One thing that stuck out to me was the way they described the fast food "meat" as pink slime. My dad when I was little worked at a fast-food restaurant as a second job and described the meat the same way. It is so sad and disgusting that people actually eat and enjoy it.

I have sort of mixed feelings about this. though I feel these workers should advocate for better wages and right to unionize I feel it is sort of pointless to advocate for those things in such an easy job. I think it is important for all workers to have a voice but why waste your time fighting in such a bad industry when you can use your energy to get a better job.

This was a very interesting chapter to read. It was interesting to see how capitol effects how people are treated in a community. It also stuns me how certain companies control a market worldwide. It honestly disgusts me how much power one person and institution can hold. The goods people consume allow us to draw boundaries socially by signaling taste, values, and socio-economic status. Commodities like luxury cars, designer clothing, electronics, and even exotic animals draw boundaries that are often associated with wealth. Items help us align ourselves with certain social groups and distinguish from others who do not have access to these same goods.

Growing up I played a lot of sports including football, basketball, soccer, tennis, track and field, and softball. I don't think I ever realized the difference between me and other teammates in a demographic sense. Most of the people on my sports teams were from the same neighborhood as me and only a select few were maybe slightly more fortunate.

The music I listened to growing up was whatever my parents had put on my MP3 player or whatever was playing on the radio. My parents' music definitely opened my eyes to a lot of different genres of music that I still enjoy now. I would say the radio definitely constrained my musical preference and caused me to listen to only new age music for a long time. Now that I'm older I enjoy a much broader range of music.

I believe that it is definitely and interesting subject to think about. Most people like me struggle internally with everything that we face in the world. It is definitely something that can be conquered but I don't think it can ever necessarily be escaped. As long as the system is still racist people will always feel this way and share these struggles.

I agree that facing the issue of self in order to be a better person is the most important thing. Most people who are racist have been taught to be that way since birth and until they face themselves and make conscious decisions, they will remain that way. I do think that a person's actions define everything there is to see about them. When a person changes their actions, they have the ability to change who they are.

Toys/Gender, Sex and Sexuality

Growing up I always hated that I was expected to like certain things. I always wanted to play football and video games and do all the "boy things". I feel like all the toys certain genders are expected to play with definitely teaches kids young how to be that gender. I love the idea of gender-neutral toys, clothing, etc. I think it would help the kids learn to express themselves individually instead of conforming to gender norms. I think it's definitely a marketing strategy and all for money how everything is separated by gender.

Beauty/ Ideology and Intersectionality

I think that there is a lot of pressure when it comes to beauty and beauty standards. I don't think I necessarily struggle with this as much as others, I personally am blessed with clear skin, light eyes, nice teeth, and a good sense of style and confidence in myself. I think that these standards could be attained if that is what someone truly wants. As far as avoiding being a consumer I think that is very possible as long as you have your own sense of what you believe beauty is. I feel that I definitely am constantly resisting dominant appearance ideals. I am on the heavier side and my skin is definitely not fair or light. I am a big advocate for defying the norms for sure.

Wedding Dreams

I have never fantasized about getting married and I honestly don't think I ever will. I think the typical fairytale wedding does not appeal to me because it is extremely unfamiliar to me. I've never been to a wedding and don't know any married people besides my parents. I also have always felt like having a traditional "white wedding" is a big waste of money. I also deeply appreciate being alone and having time for my family and friends. Community is important to be able to build substantial wealth which is important to me. I don't really see myself being with someone because I already have to take care of myself and my parents so another person along with that just isn't ideal. One of the biggest reasons is I will never love anyone as much as I love myself. I have noticed I can be very selfish with my time in a relationship and tend to lack empathy after being around someone often.

Counting Beauty

After my analysis I realized that the most represented group in the health magazines are skinny white women as they showed up 32 times out of the 50. There was only 1 person with visible body fat, and they weren't really big just a little chunky. This obviously portrays the narrative that fair skin and skinny is beautiful and healthy. In the entire 50 there were no black men and only 2 black women, one is a famous athlete, and the other is a famous actor (I did not recognize any of the white women featured). I will say this analysis disgusted me but I was not surprised. Also I'd like to add that I love my beautiful black kings and queens.

Toy Store Observations

The toys are clearly separated by gender with the more neutral stuff along the middle of the store. The first thing I noticed is that a lot of toys aimed at boys include colors like red, blue and yellow while the toys I presumed to be aimed at girls include a lot more pink, black, white and purple branding. The baby toys seem to be the most gender-neutral but things get clearly more separate as age range increases. In the toddler range there is baby dolls dressed in lots of pink which is clearly aimed at the girls. While toys aimed at boys in this age range are lots of trucks and outdoor toys. For the older kids in the 7-10 age range there is action figures vs dolls which is clearly aimed at certain genders. Also, a lot of remote-control vehicle toys and motor-powered bikes. For all ages there are stuffed animals that range in size and color.

Race as we learned in class is a social construct used to put people into categories based on the physical characteristics being, skin color, hair texture, features, etc. Race has nothing to do with biology as we also learned in class, but race is often used to maintain discrimination and inequality. These categories and characteristics that make up race are created and enforced by society as a whole. The idea of race is simply a product of historical and cultural factors and varies from place and time period.
