The US does not want the bad parts of its history exposed because they want to look good on the world stage. Our imperialsitic endeavors would make other countries question the integrity of our ideological principles of democracy and independence. If the U.S. believed that its treatment of Filipinos was warranted, it would not have covered up its militaristic conflict with the Filipino people who called for true independence.

Puck is trying to convey that Roosevelt looks tough and in control, but the reality is that he's getting tied up and his power is becoming constrained by the amount that he has to deal with. It's also putting a perspective on how the U.S. has accumulated so many responsibilities that even the president is losing control. It's supposed to show that becoming an empire and expanding does not simplify anything and often multiplies crises, and no one person can easily run and handle everything at once.

This cartoon depicts the anti-imperialists fighting back against the ideals of the imperialists. The anti-imperialists are shown to be old women tearing down a memorial of imperialist leaders including McKinley and the US Army and Navy. Anti-Imperialists argue that imperialism is unconstitutional and goes agains the core ideas of American and democratic values. However, leaders such as McKinley believed that imperialism would increase foreign power for the US, and create economic opportunity full of resources. Additionally, the army and navy understood that foreign ports and bases would provide a large advantage in international affairs and potentially warfare. These clashing ideas created conflict for the country when facing this moral dilemma.

A basket of people of color are being handed over to try and enter the US. On one hand there is liberty representing republican virtue displayed as a women, and the other side is uncle sam representing the states. he is being disapproving of the women showing gender roles and also how there were spilt ideas about imperialism. Behind the gate are children that represent states in the west that were already annexed by the US. In front of the gate, the new states are naked and crying and being shown as inferior and uncivilized in the eyes of America. There are also white hands holding the baby basket to represent paternalism and white mans burden that America felt they needed to "save" the other countries.
