In Greek Mythology Poseidon is the Greek god of "sea (and of water generally), earthquakes, and horses" (The Editors of Encyclopaedia Britannica). Hid name means husband of the earth. We was the youngest son of Cronus. Zeus and Hades were his brothers. His weapon is the trident.

Theme/Idea

Poseidon's character revolves around his vengeful nature. After Odysseus blinded his son (Cyclops) he became enraged and swore Odysseus to be his sworn enemy. Poseidon got to relieve a little bit of this vengeful needs by making Odysseus have a very hard time in the ocean when sailing back home.

His Role in the Odyssey

He is one of Odysseus’s many antagonists. Odysseus blinds his son, the Cyclops, so he tries to make it harder on him. "Ironically, Poseidon is the patron of the seafaring Phaeacians, who ultimately help to return Odysseus to Ithaca" (The Odyssey: Character List | SparkNotes).
