In Pavlov’s experiment, the interaction was beneficial to both, the human and the dogs. The dogs were able to shift their emotions and behave a certain way with the use of a neutral stimulus. The ringing of a bell, paired with a reward, such as food, evoked positive association and in return, good behavior. The dogs, as well as the human, were able to predict what was going to take place. Pavlov was able to predict the behavior of his dogs, having repeated the experiment numerous times, and the dogs were able to predict the arrival of food following the sound of the bell.

Possible Disadvantages of Classical Conditioning

In order for Classical Conditioning to be effective, the owner of the dog must be consistent with the training. The same way dogs can associate the sound of the bell with food, they can just as quickly forget about the association if they don’t always receive food after the ringing of the bell. Classical conditioning might not work effectively on dogs with a history of abuse. The owner must be cautious that the dog can have different responses to the environment.
