Specialty hospitals are hospitals that specialize in providing care for a particular problem or condition or for a particular age group. Long term care facilities are similar to this type of hospital in the sense that they specialize for a certain group of people, typically the elderly or those suffering from a long term illness, but there are still differences. Long term care facilities specialize in the care for elderly people, chronic or long term illness patients, etc,. However, there are many different types of specialty hospitals so each specialty hospital specializes in something different.

This type of facility provides care for those who need skilled nursing or rehabilitative care. Patients typically stay until they are ready to be sent back home or to another long term care facility. This is similar to hospitals because hospitals take in patients and will help them with their medical needs, and sometimes help with rehabilitation of patients after surgeries, illnesses, accidents, etc,. These patients may be sent to another type of hospital or sent home similar to what happens in extended care and skilled care facilities.

A residential care facility is a place that provides a chance for patients who can no longer care for themselves to be able to have social interactions with other people; it also provides support doing daily activities, as well as physical and emotional support. This is similar to hospitals because they too provide support and care for those who need it, but the difference is that with hospitals, it is usually temporary with the hope of getting the patient to being independent again. Also, people in these facilities are typically all elderly, whereas with hospitals it can vary to all different age groups.
