Los metales preciosos son aquellos metales que se encuentran directamente en estado puro (menas), es decir que no se encuentran combinados con otros metales, y que además tienen un alto valor económico debido a  que son poco frecuentes (poco abundantes). Por ejemplo el oro que se encuentra en forma de pepitas directamente y es poco abundante en la naturaleza. Ojo no confundir con las Piedras Preciosas.
En joyería se consideran metales preciosos el platino, el oro y la plata, en ese orden por el valor económico que tienen.  Se usan en joyería no solo por su rareza, sino también por su atractivo. Pero además de estos también se consideran metales preciosos el Paladio y el Rodio.
El Rodio al ser un metal muy raro de encontrar, ahora mismo, es el metal más caro, incluso cotiza por encima del oro.
