This can be seen from the line in chapter two which states,” ‘Bruno, just do it, please!’ snapped Mother, because apparently it was all right if she interrupted him but it didn’t work the other way round.” (page 14) Mother said it in a very harsh tone, that shows forcefulness towards Bruno, meaning that Mother always wanted Bruno to follow exactly as she said and if Bruno failed to do so, she would yell at him. Therefore, Mother is controlling towards Bruno.

📍 Mr. Chow's comments: What kind of tone is Mother adopting here? How does the tone show that she is controlling?

Chapter 2 pg 14: Mother is timid and fearful. This can be seen from the Text which states "Some people make all the decisions for us." This shows that mother explicitly did not name the person she was trying to talk about as she was scared that Bruno would tell father what mother said about him and may get into a quarrel with him, as Father was powerful, even when he is not in the room, he runs the show. Hence, Mother is timid and fearful of powerful people.

Mother appears to be submissive towards her husband. As you can see from the text, mother said that "some people" make<del>s</del> decisions for us,which shows that the mother is being controlled by her husband and does not have much say compared to her husband (is it true that she does not have any say at all?) in his decisions as she is afraid to speak up and defend herself from her husband. Therefore, I feel that she is submissive towards her husband and obeys his commands unwillingly without a single word as she knows that her husband is the one that makes the decisions for the family and expects everyone to obey his every word.

Bruno's mother is very demure because she always follows Bruno's father when it comes to making decisions and cannot stand up to the father for what she wants which can be shown from the phrase, "Some people make all the decisions for us." From this phrase, it is evident that "Some people" refers to Bruno's father as the helplessness she feels is shown when she cannot refuse the decision that Bruno's father made directly.

📍 Mr. Chow's comments: Demure carries the connotation that she is shy and reserved, possibly due to her innate personality. In this case, it sounds like she is being submissive and following Father's decision. Demure is not exactly the right word.

mother is very respectful to father and obeys his instructions. this can be seen from the novel when mother says "we don't have the luxury of thinking"( pg 13 ) this suggests that mother do not get the rights to make decisions for the family. she has no power in the household to make any big decisions for the family. instead, father is the only person in the household with the rights and power to make the family's decisions. hence, mother respects father a lot.

📍 Mr. Chow's comments: Good analysis of Mother's choice of words! Keep it up! Is there another example in C1 - 2 that shows she is submits to Father's decisions? It helps to make your argument more convincing if you include more than one piece of evidence, to show that Mother is consistently exhibiting this particular character trait.

One character trait of mother is that she is mostly patient with Bruno, but to an extent. She is patient with Bruno at the start when Bruno realises that the family is moving out of Berlin. However, she becomes increasingly frustrated towards Bruno when Bruno refuses to listen to her and accept the reality that they are living in Out-With. Initially in page 14 ‘Mother smiled and put the glasses down on the table. “I have another phrase for you,” she said. “It’s that we have to make the best out of a bad situation.”’ This shows that Mother was very patient, as instead of shouting at him, she talked politely and calmly with Bruno despite his persistent complaining about Out-With. Later on, however, Bruno's mother becomes upset and controlling towards Bruno. Therefore, Mother starts out as being patient with Bruno but is subsequently frustrated with his stubbornness.

Bruno's Mother is an impatient person.
This can be seen where she replies to Bruno when he insists on leaving Out-With and going back to Berlin and says, "Bruno, I want you to go upstairs and unpack and I want you to do it now, said Mother in an unfriendly voice,". (pg 15) This gives me an impression that Mother did not want to explain to Bruno about why they didn't want to leave the new house to her son and hence, makes me feel that she is an impatient person.

📍 Mr. Chow's comments: Is it fair to say that Bruno's mother is a totally impatient person? She tried to be patient with Bruno by explaining that his plans with his friends 'are just going to have to wait' (p8). Perhaps it is more accurate to say that Mother is mostly impatient with Bruno even though she tries to consider his feelings.

Bruno’s mother maintains respect to higher authorities when talking to bruno about moving as although she feels similarly and longs also to stay in berlin, she is put in a position where she can do nothing about it and must also show support for it as she has to be respectful to the father’s decision. This can be seen when she says to bruno that “some people make all the decisions for us” (pg 14). she expresses her displeasure (📍 Mr. Chow's comments: how do we know that she is displeased? Analyse her choice of words here. Is she being passive aggressive by trying not to specify who she is referring to her, though it is clear to the reader that it is Father's decision to move to Out-With due to his job?) while at the same time continues to be respectful by not mentioning the decision-maker’s name or calling them out. this shows that she shows respect to power.

mother is passive-aggressive, patient and protective. the quote, ”some people make all the decisions for us.”(pg 14) tells us that mother is a passive-aggressive person as she did not directly refer father or hitler as “some people”. mother stayed patient with bruno even when he was constantly assertive of his opinions and even though she was frustrated, she did not take her frustration out on bruno, until later on (chapter 1) mother kept the reality of what was actually happening from bruno, trying to protect him from it (chapter 1).she did not want bruno to be affected by such a terrifying reality. hence, i think that mother is passive-aggressive, patient and protective.

📍 Mr. Chow's comments: These are good points that you have made. In order to ensure that your paragraph shows focused and in-depth thinking, you only need to explain one (or at the most two) character traits in ONE paragraph. Analyse Mother's choice of words as a way to explain her character trait.

Bruno's mother is very protective of Bruno. This can be seen from when mother did not want to tell Bruno what his father's job was. For example in the text when Bruno asked " what kind of job?" (pg4) and mother just said it was "a very important job" (pg5) and " A job that needs a very special man to do it." This shows that Bruno's mother did not want Bruno to be exposed to what his father was doing and was very vague about it. She wanted to protect him from the horrors and harsh reality of what was actually going on - refer directly to the Holocaust or the Nazi regime. She also wanted to let Bruno have no worries about what was happening. Thus, Bruno's mother is very protective of him.

📍 Mr. Chow's comments: Good job in explaining how Mother is protective of Bruno. Is there another reason why she does not want to reveal Father's job to Bruno? Maybe she thinks that he is too young to comprehend what an army commander does? In that sense Mother is protective on two counts: she does not want to expose Bruno to the horrors of the Nazi regime and she thinks he is too young to understand complex matters like ranks and roles in the military.

Chapter 2 pg 14: Mother is timid and fearful towards father even though she is married to him, as he has the power to do whatever he wants to her if he is discontented with what Mother thinks about him. This can be seen from the text which states “Some people make all the decisions for us.” This shows that Mother explicitly did not name the person she was trying to talk about even though she was thoroughly upset and unsatisfied with the current situation that she was in and she was scared that Bruno would tell father what she had said about him and Father would be displeased, which may result in a quarrel that will not end well. Hence, Mother’s personality traits are fearful and timid.

📍 Mr. Chow's comments: This is a focused paragraph. Good job! You might want to rephrase your first sentence so it's shorter and more succinct. It always help to break down your thoughts into precise sentences.
