I feel that the purpose of this weeks reading was to help us understand how growing up, there are some traumas and mentalities that can cause a long term effect on you.The importance of being oppressed to speak up by others around you can affect you long term as you grow with a fear and different mentality as you don’t have the right to have your voice being heard.

This reading focuses on how this girl grew up in the south. She talks about how growing up in the South, voicing your opinion to elders and others who were older than you was seen as a disrespectful thing to do. “In the “old school,” children were meant to be seen and not heard...To make yourself be heard if you were a child was to invite punishment…” Growing up, she continued with the fear of speaking up and stating her opinion. Even as a fully grown woman, her struggles of being oppressed grew with her even as a successful writer. 

Growing up in house holds of color, speaking up can be very difficult since most of us have been oppressed with the ability of speaking up and voicing your opinion. This tends to distance us at a young age since we are sometimes pushed away from certain conversations. Not only this but elders don’t allow kids to get involved in conversations that don’t pertain them. There are some topics that could worry us which is why they hide and avoid having certain situations with kids. Adding on, long term effects of being oppressed are not being able to express who you are, you are concerned with what people will say about you when you speak up, the fear of your reputation can be on the line as you might say something that wasn’t meant to be said, and ordering at restaurants can be difficult

This reading is relative to us and the real world as it is a topic that still continues to haunt many people. There are some experiences in which you won’t get the support from others around you which affects you as you don’t give yourself the credit you deserve and it creates a lack of reassurance which is the effect caused by oppression at an early age. 

The reason why we choose this quote is that it shows you how much the percentage of English language learners has changed. The percentage is so high now that they are many people who are trying to learn about the language. 

Applications: So this can apply to us because some of us are the minority and it can have a huge effect on how ready we are for college or higher education

Reflections: The reading was very informative on what equity means in this day and age. I also thought it was really helpful how they quantified what it means to have reached educational equity.

It's kinda a current thing women today are being silenced or being told what to do when they do something that they “shouldn't be doing” they get told to go do this instead and be pushed down. When I was in high school I notice that when female students wanted to talk not many students were paying attention. I decided to show them that I was paying attention and to show them it doesn’t matter if most of the class does not care. The only thing that matter is speaking up for yourself

I feel like this thing with women not having a voice is still common out in the world today but not as strict as it was back then like with belle hooks that she couldn't talk about these things or else she would be punished but if she was a male she wouldn't. To be shared in school because it will open people's points of view about the issue that many women faced throughout their whole lives. That woman should not be afraid of speaking up for themselves.

The main important concept is that “Is the student equipt to graduate?”

Reflection:
Learning about an equitable education is a good and needed experience for every and any student; students are entitled to having an education that serves them and historically there have been students denied this right. Also, ​​equality in education is an opportunity for students to have equal opportunity, to begin with, favorable educational results, and equity aids in ensuring that those equal possibilities are modified to allow room for children who may require additional assistance and attention.

Application - As of today, there are still inequalities that exist between women and men. Oftentimes, women’s ideas, voice and even their presence are not valued or taken into consideration due old social norms that are still being followed by those who hold power and dominance over our society.


Reflection - Being a woman in today’s society has a variety of conflicts that has potentially affected our growth and courage to continue in our life journey. Expressing our needs in today’s society has become one of the most difficult, yet inspiring things that womanhood has done. Even Though there are individuals that ignore the inequalities that exist between men and women, these struggles have only been our inspiration to continue on terminating these gender/social roles.
