Darry is the person we chose to analyze. Darry's actions are motivated by his drive to help his brothers. This motivator messes with his desire to live his own life and go to college, so it creates conflicting emotions. It even says "'You know, the only thing that keeps Darry from bein' a Soc is us.'"(126). That means that if Darry didn't care about his brothers, then he would have been a successful person.

It says, "Darry liked anything that took strength..." (133). I think that he just wants to prove to himself that he is strong, and someone he wants to be.

"Darry wheeled around and slapped me so hard that it knocked me against the door." (50). This is demonstrated twice in the book, once when Two-Bit says, "'You know, the only thing that keeps Darry from bein' a Soc is us.'" (126), and also when it tells us that Darry was friends with the Socs when he used to be in high school.

Darry's flaw is not being able to control his own emotions, especially the actions that he takes. For example, he is so worried and angry at Ponyboy that he slaps him when Pony finally returns home. "Darry wheeled around and slapped me so hard that it knocked me against the door." (50). Another example is crying at the hospital. It's normal to cry when you see your brother safe after he runs away, but Darry is portrayed as a more resilient person who doesn't cry.

ISTP

When we took the personality test, Darry came out as a ISTP. It says that people with the ISTP personality like to take everything apart and put it back together. When I think of Darry, I don' think of a creative person. But, before their parents died, maybe Darry was creative and liked to make things better. We really couldn't tell if we was like this before, because minimal information is given. But in the book it says, "Darry stared at him for a second, then cracked a grin." (9). I think that the grin is the old Darry who was Sodapop's brother and friend, not his father. That is why he is cold to Ponyboy, because they were never really brothers or friends. I think it is somewhat accurate in saying Darry is down to Earth, and goes on his experiences, not his dreams. He knows that his mission is for his brothers to succeed, because he thinks that he can't.

Extended Metaphor

Darry is a taco. He is hard on the outside, but on the inside he is a variety of "flavors". But, when you talk or him or "eat" him, his inner self comes spilling out. You can see he hides his feelings behind the shell he formed when his parents died, and he was left to take care of his two brothers. He is harder on Ponyboy because their relationship wasn't established before Darry's hard-shell was formed. But Sodapop was around Darry's age, and understood what was happening on a more mature level. "Darry stared at him for a second, then cracked a grin." (9). That made their relationship better than Darry and Pony's relationship."'He's hard as rock and about as human....He thinks I'm a pain in the neck....'" (42). Ponyboy feels as if Darry doesn't like him, because Darry has formed his shell, and Ponyboy has no access, until later in the book.

Ponyboy: The Reluctant Hero. Ponyboy is the reluctant hero because he is just a normal kid until one day he stays out too late, and he ends up accidentally falling asleep in the parking lot. Then, his oldest brother, worried to death, slaps him when he gets home. "Darry wheeled around and slapped me so hard that it knocked me against the door." (50). Then, Ponyboy runs away to the park with Johnny, where everything goes wrong.

Johnny: The Confidant. Johnny is Pony's confidant throughout the book, like when Darry slaps Pony. Ponyboy runs away and goes to Johnny. "'Johnny?' I called, and started when he rolled over and jumped up almost under my feet. 'Come on, Johnny, we're running away.'" (51). They end up becoming companions for the rest of the story.

Darry: The Hotshot. Darry is the hotshot because in the book, it says that he would be a Soc if the others Greasers weren't there for him. "'You know, the only thing that keeps Darry from bein' a Soc is us.'" (126). Darry also seems seperated from the rest because he actually follows the rules and excelled in high school.

Dally: The Hero. Dally is the hero because even though he is extremely shady and hardcore, he still has a good side. He ends up helping Johnny and Ponyboy run away, "'Here' - he handed us a gun and a roll of bills - 'the gun's loaded...Here's fifty bucks...'Hop the three-fifteen freight to Windrixville,' Dally instructed. 'There's an old abandoned church on top of Jay Mountain. There's a pump in the back, so don't worry about water. Buy a week's supply of food as soon as you get there..." (60-61), and also saves the Greasers when they have the rumble with the Socs.

Cherry: The Peacemaker. Cherry is the peacemaker because she tries to help the people on both the West and East Sides of the town. She tries to prevent Bob from reaching his limit and getting drunk, while she tries to make the Greasers realize that the Socs need something to do, and that they do have feelings.

Keith "Two-Bit" Matthews: The Trickster. Two-Bit is the trickster because he always smartmouths and shoplifts. He tricks people, and always give his two-bit's worth in.

In the Outsiders, the setting is imperative to the story. With the great location, and the divide between the rich and the poor creates the perfect system to contrast the two levels of society. "We're poorer than the Socs." (3). The differences are financial like most places. If the setting was different we as the readers wouldn't have gotten the same feel for what the characters had to go through.
