Belcher, 25, fatally shot Perkins 10 times with a .40-milimeter handgun in the master bathroom of their home around 7:50 a.m. on Dec. 1 before driving to the Chiefs' practice facility and committing suicide in front of Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli, head coach Romeo Crennel and linebackers coach Gary Gibbs. Belcher was in his fourth year with the Chiefs, and had developed from an undrafted player out of the University of Maine to become a starting inside linebacker. Moments before firing one bullet into his right temple, Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher thanked his bosses for trying to help him fix his ailing relationship with his girlfriend, Kasandra Perkins, and asked the Chiefs' officials to "take care of my baby."

After Jovan Belcher committed suicide at Arrowhead Stadium, his family requested an autopsy on his brain. The autopsy showed that Belcher had signs of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). they also found a form of brain damage found in athletes and others with a history of repetitive brain injuries. Belcher's mother, sued the Chiefs in late December, alleging Belcher had suffered repetitive head trauma and that the team failed to provide adequate medical care before the shooting deaths. CTE has been found in other former NFL players. They include Junior Seau, Dave Duerson and Andre Waters -- all of them committed suicide.

Jovan Belcher's NFL playing career only lasted two years, as we was signed as a free agent by the Chiefs in 2010. Jackson County Medical Examiner's office released autopsy reports, and this autopsy was not about his brain and CTE. The autopsy showed that Belcher had a blood alcohol content of 0.170 mg/dL in his system, which is double the legal driving limit in Missouri. The Kansas City Chiefs had a game the next day following Belcher's murder/suicide.
