Unfortunately for them, there is no secret among the Vietnamese during this time. Many people board the ship too without denying entry to others since the aren't heartless. Eventually, Há and her family got off the ship since they heard that there would be a better engine and more necessary materials such as water in the other ship. They weren't able to get on the ship due to may people also wanting to get on which caused chaos. They started hearing bombs. Fortunately they were able to get on a ship which was the same one they had taken in the first place. The commander had chosen a safe river route to connect to the sea. This was a safe route since it wasn't the obvious escape path through Vūng Táu ,where communists would know to find people. A pilot ended up on the ship where Ha was. He explained how the communists had crashed the tanks through the gates of the presidential palace, and placed a flag with one star. This meant that Saigon, was officially gone.  They eventually started to adjust to the conditions. After about a week, South Vietnam was officially gone. The ship had to stop its journey to Thailand since the engine couldn't take it anymore further. They were rescued by an American ship fortunately where there was more food.
