Introduction

Ratliff defines transmission as a state in which there is an extreme form of emotion in music that transcends specific moods. I think this means that a song on its own is not much, but when sung by an artist that portrays the emotions within the song, then that is when it becomes good. I do agree that this is a very significant element in music, this is how music becomes relatable to the audience. As Ratliff says, "We need to attach emotional descriptions to music in order to contain it, fix it, tag it, draw its boundaries, know what use it has, and remember how to fix it." I will be evaluating The Maze's song, "The Morning After" from Ratliff's playlist as well as "Losin Control" by Russ which is outside of his playlist on how these pieces exemplify the state of transmission.

Ratliff talks about how this song is a "moral compromise, about infidelity, that asks all the right questions, over slow, reduced funk, bringing none of the answers." The singer and his character in the song speak of infidelity and the satisfaction yet danger he senses when he is in the act. It shows his true emotions and gives out his target audience.

This is a song that I can relate to personally. I believe that Russ portrays a man that is falling for a girl that has gotten hurt before. He sings about this girl and all her troubles and flaws. This song makes me very emotional and it hits to the heart very easily. I never thought that music could have such an impact on me and my feelings with the emotions portrayed in such a song.

Change in Mood

When I think of the state of trasmission I think of two things. The first thing I think of is the emotions that come into play. Songs can change your emotion completely, you could be sad and a song could cheer you up and make you dance. Or it could be the opposite and completely bring down your mood. The second thing I think of is a car. Transmissions are in music and in cars, so I think this picture depicts both pretty well since it looks like a speedometer as well as added emotions.

Credit: Stockfresh.com

"I Fall Apart" by Post Malone

Another song I feel that I can feel the emotions within the character personally is "I Fall Apart" by Post Malone. His song is about somebody that he has cared about deeply and hurt him in the past. He tries to forget about this person because of all the pain they have caused. He sings with such somber and passion. I think that everyone can somehow relate to this one in one way or another.
