For each hazard you need to find out who might be harmed, so you can find out the best way of controlling the risk.

Think about people who aren't in the workplace at all times (visitors, contractors, maintenance workers).

When selecting and using PPE:

Choose products which are CE marked in accordance with the Personal Protective Equipment Regulations 2002 – suppliers can advise you
Choose equipment that suits the user – consider the size, fit and weight of the PPE. If the users help choose it, they will be more likely to use it
what might cause harm to people and decide whether you are taking reasonable steps to prevent that harm.

Step 3 Evaluate the risks:

Decide how likely it is that harm will occur.

Do everything "reasonably practicable", balance the level of risk with the measures needed to control the risk in terms of money, time and trouble.

Only include what you could be reasonably expected to know.

Step 4 record your significant findings:

If you have fewer than 5 employees you don't have to write anything down.

If you have 5 or more employees you are required by law to write it down.

make sure that a proper check was made, you asked who was affected, you've dealt with all the significant hazards, you involved employees and representatives in the process, and the precautions were reasonable.

Step 5 regularly review your risk assessment:

You must regularly review your risk assessment as sooner or later there will be new equipment and chemicals in your workplace which could introduce new hazards.
