The Sirens are the daughters of Achelous; their mother is unclear. Demeter gave them wings to look after her daughter, Persephone, but after they failed to protect Persephone from Hades, Demeter cursed them to sing a sad yet beautiful song.

Odysseus becomes the first human to survive the lure of the Sirens. He uses wax to stuff the ears of his crew, and has his men tie him up with orders not to let him go. The Sirens lure Odysseus with the promise of knowledge, which contrasts to the typical image of Sirens using femininity to draw their victims.
