Subway seemingly didn't know what was going on with Fogle, but when the truth came to light, they immediately released an official statement indicating that Subway was previously unaware of, shocked by, and would be “monitoring” the situation.

Subway began to shift focus away from Fogle, removing his name, image and association from collateral, in-store material, digital platforms and its website.

The Issues with Subway's Response

They took 6 weeks to respond overtly to the crisis.

They didn't fully respond to the public.

They began taking Fogle out of their advertisements and PR without making an official statement.

They said, "No further comment." Companies should never avoid making a statement for a crisis of this degree!!

They seemed insincere about the situation. Their quotes and tweets were vague, cryptic, and generally seemed insincere and detached.

It didn't launch a new campaign to distract and overcome their image crisis. They didn't offer any form of solution.

How it Could Have Been Handled Better!!!

Subway should have refocused on what the values of the company were, and really delve in to how they can best present the values of their company.

The problem with a spokesperson is that the company is attaching their whole brand representation on one person, instead of an idea. The "Eat Fresh" brand slogan is much more powerful, and isn't such a huge liability. The company should have immediately honed in on the healthy aspect of their brand, to appeal to their consumers in a direct and relatable way.

I also would have done MUCH MORE to make sure that Jared Fogle wasn't an immense predator to children. That kind of information shouldn't have came to the light before Subway could make any comment.
