Just Like Me by Keri Burns

How have people with your identities been represented in the media (games, TV shows, movies, apps, books, toys, etc.) they participate in? Think of a character you love who represents you in some capacity and share why that representation matters to you. Write a paragraph explaining how that character represents you and why that representation matters.

I chose Annabeth Chase from Percy Jackson for a variety of reasons. First, I love reading as much as this child of Athena does. Second, I hope to become an architect someday as she does and to be able to impact the world in some way. Third, I can understand the need to be hardworking and find a solution to every issue. Overall, she is a kind, hardworking, and sometimes stubborn person, and that is why I chose her. I love it when you can just relate to a character and I feel it is important to know that there are people who have been in your shoes and that you are heard, something that should be said for all of us.

I chose Elsa from Four Winds by Kristin Hannah. She has a quiet strength and perseveres through so many hard times, continuing to do the right thing, nobly and quietly. Eventually, she rises up and does more than just speak up in order to change the future for many. I see myself in her because I grew up a poor farmer's daughter, quiet and reserved; however, I learned that I had to come out of my shell and speak truth so that my children could have a better future.

That girl was a little bit too relatable at times. She had a bad experience when she was putting her effort into having a relationship with someone who clearly didn't put as much of it in.
I've had friendships like that, and I can say that it definitely leaves some issues with trusting easily afterward, like how she was with Hercules. She was almost looking for a fault or a slipup as her signal to back off.
Also, her jokes. I find that I have a pretty similar sense of humor to her, plus the sarcasm, I'm loving the whole thing.
She gives off a very "I don't need your help or want it" vibe, which I can relate to because I always want to be able to do things by myself. Having to ask for help annoys me.
But yeah, that's how I relate to Megara, who definitely deserves to be counted as a princess by the way.

I chose the character Elle Woods from legally blonde, because I relate to her confidence. Just like Elle I don't care what people think, no matter what I will always be my self and not change for others. In the movie there is a part where she gets tricked into dressing up for a party when no one else was. She walks in dressed up and says she was just wanting to dress up and have some fun instead of getting mad at the person who tricked her. In a situation like that I would probably do the same thing! Elle Woods also stuck to her story and found enough evidence to prove that she was right! Just like Elle I stick to my thoughts, have confidence, and I will never change for anyone.

Although he is more known for representing the black community, it is still nice to see a Hispanic who is also a superhero. Additionally, he also works very hard during school and gets pretty good grades. All of this and more is why I relate to Miles Morales so much.

That representation matters because it's important to represent the strong, driven women in the world.

I can specifically relate to Rory in the first couple seasons of Gilmore Girls. And I have a few reasons: First, she is a freshman in highschool, who is dropped into a competitive school, (which I experienced at Vista) we both had a lot of learning to do about GPA, college, and how to find a balance between school/home life (which I still haven't quite mastered :). She's kind of a perfectionist, but doesn't push herself to the point that Paris pushes herself, and understands where her limits are. and I really look up to and relate to that. Second, she is really, really close to her mom, as I feel about my family. So overall, just watching the show, gives me someone to relate to in the scary, confusing, wonderful world of highschool.

In addition to to being very particular about everything, she is very invested in things that most people aren't. Unlike the typical character, she isn't an athlete or some great singer, but she has passions. She enjoys history, crossword puzzles, stories, and plays, things I love as well. Dawn can be quite overdramatic at times, as I am, but she always is there for her friends.

A character that I connect to a lot is Alex Mercer from the show Julie and the Phantoms. Not only is his character some of the best queer representation I've seen, but he also has anxiety. As a queer person with anxiety, seeing him treated as just any other character, seeing that his anxiety is acknowledged and not made to be the butt of the jokes, and that's he's given depth and a storyline beyond his sexuality, but is still out and it's blatantly stated that he's gay; these things make me feel very represented and seen. He's also sarcastic, and emotional, which are traits I see in myself, along with his difficulty handling change. Queer representation is incredibly important in media, more specifically, good queer representation. It's very refreshing to see myself in media, not as a 2D stereotype, or a joke, a token character thrown in for to claim diversity, but as a real character with personality and emotions and depth.
