My family and I have experienced the Native American culture here in the Pacific Northwest in two ways. There was a weekend in the spring (pre-pandemic) where we participated in the Tilicum Excursion to Blake Island. It was so fun because we got to ride a boat and learn about the birthplace of Chief Seattle. Blake Island is really pretty and it was our first time eating dinner and seeing so many arts and dances in a large longhouse. Every summer we go to the Evergreen State Fair. We make time to go see the longhouse, totem poles, and wood carvings. There is also a long house on site where you can learn about language preservation and eat tasty frybread. While these experiences are “touristy” they have showed me that Native American culture here in the PNW is very beautiful.

Many aspects of my life can relate to experiencing Indigenous heritage. Last week I went to the Burke Museum on the side of the school, which has very much to offer about indigenous heritage. The main things I learned about were their traditional crafts and language. Native art is diverse and includes various forms such as beading, pottery, basket weaving and intricate textile designs. Many Native American tribes have their own languages, and efforts are being made to preserve and revitalize these languages as they are an important part of the cultural heritage. Different tribes also have unique ceremonial practices, like rituals and dances, that are integral to their cultural and spiritual identity.

I have experienced the Native American culture before. Last year, I lived in Theory and it's on the Ave. Every weekend, there's a market fair near the bus station. I often go there to buy some ingredients to go back to cooking. It's cool to buy the fresh foods and meet some people there.

Every year Seattle hosts a craft fair where native people sell their handmade goods, many of which have distinct and unique cultural elements. People could support the indigenous artists through purchasing the crafts they made. It's also a way to promote indigenous culture.

My earliest experience with Indigenous heritage was most likely in elementary school when we learned a little bit about the Chief behind Seattle, when we read Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O'Dell (Highly recommend), and the salmon cycle. The book Island of the Blue Dolphins was very influential because we would learn about Native American culture with a culturally sensitive approach and discuss similarities and differences between American and Native American culture. We read about the main character's experience living in her tribe and encounters with white settlers and missionaries. Earlier experiences and discussions on indigenous heritage taught me to respect their culture and also appreciate how indigenous heritage sees animals and the environment with high importance.
