I am currently working in a secondary school. Professional development is one of the main focuses in our school.

Besides having staff development day, our school also encourages teaching staff to have lesson observations. Usually, lesson observation is linked to staff appraisal. The lesson is only observed by your supervisor so that all the teaching staff must put much effort into preparing the lesson. However, we are forced to invite colleagues from the same panel and other panels. It will be much better if we can invite the Principal and Vice-principal to observe the lesson. Therefore, there are at least four to five teachers to observe your lesson. After the lesson observation, we also arrange a meeting for all the observers and the teacher to share their views or what they have observed in the lesson. This communication and exchange help the young teachers learn from experienced teachers by observing their lessons. Experienced teachers also can learn from young teachers in applying different technologies in the lessons.

The school will also arrange some professional development activities for committee chairpersons and panel chairpersons to enhance their ability to lead the committees and panels or exchange their ideas with the teachers from other schools.

I think the design of the professional development in our school is all-rounded. It allows teaching staff to learn from internal and external members in various ways.

Professional development in my workplace is mixed. Often, I find some colleagues are simply there to tick the box. However, there are often members of staff who volunteer or are asked to run an in-house session.
These are far more engaging, I guess because these people are more motivated to do it. These professional development sessions are often the ones that have more sustained results, for example, when new learning is sustained.

Finally, it is often difficult to classify professional development. We are given a range of professional development classifications and it can be confusing as to which classification of PD I have just done.

My NGO provides not only classroom training and overseas study tours for each colleague's professional development, but also asks our colleagues to reflect on how to apply the knowledge learned from external parties to our organization and then share it with our colleagues. I think it is quite effective for not only one's professional development, but also the organizational development as colleagues can externalize our learnt knowledge and bring influences on the organization development (adopt the best practice and avoid the lesson learnt.)

Some of our colleagues in educational development field are advised to apply for a HEA Fellowship accreditation as a path to succeed as an education professional, part of them can join the 12 sessions workshop provided by another supporting unit for getting prepared for application. Only a few of them joined and most of them changed to another institution due to the uncertainties of my own organisation. It may be getting less effective as the health of the organisation is the core drive for professional development.

I am a part-time TA at an online educational organisation. In my organisation, professional development is very important for all staff.
The first way of professional development is teaching and research conference, it provided teachers a better understanding of how can they do better in their job. I think it is effective because a lot of new teachers can not work very well due to the unfamiliar with our platforms and lacking of experience, the conference helps them to teach better.
The second way of professional development is monthly training, in the monthly training, teachers sharing their reflection, summaries the drawbacks and looking for ways for improvement. I think it is effective, too, it allows people to work in pairs and improve themselves.
The second way is microteaching. Teachers have to record small courses and analysis, it helps teachers to develop professional skills. I think this was is the most important as teachers can find the advantages and disadvantages about their teaching styles, skills, and contents.

Universities always arrange some lectures about professional development in the senior year; however, some of us (feel sorry to say so) don't think that it is far away from being effective or beneficial. It lets me think about how to conduct such kind of lectures to senior students because for long it is criticized that who gives lectures about professional development in a certain field does not have such kind of experiences at all (develop their career in the field). It might be better to develop professional development lectures as guest lectures if universities invite the external experts in the targeted industries into classrooms.

They are engaged in at least 10 hours of CPD activities that related to professional development in each year. The staff who have more than 10 hours will be given a CPD award which includes a certificate and HKD200 book coupon.
The Staff Development Sponsorship and Staff Discount Scheme allow eligible staff to attend the courses, workshops and conferences to enhance the professional qualifications.

I think it is quit effective as staff can get a good effort in pursuing self-enrichment in each year.
