On this page, we see Artie confiding in his wife, Françoise, about the guilt he feels, not having lived through the Holocaust like his parents. He explains how he feels inadequate trying to create a story about all these horrible experiences that he's heard about in great detail, but was never even a part of. This shows us that the effects of the Holocaust lie not only within the survivors, but within the people around them—especially their descendants. It's left Artie with a strange longing for having gone through the horrors that his parents did, just to feel as though he's accomplished something meaningful.

Vladek is often shown as neurotic, and it's implied it has to do with living through the Holocaust. On this page in particular, Vladek is shown suddenly yelling at Artie for wasting wooden matches to smoke and make coffee, but later admits he has at least 50 matches left. He clearly wants to save money and yells at others, but he doesn't lack money. There's clearly a lot of trauma he's affected by, and this affects the people around him.

In addition, Vladek's survival is complex. He was extremely lucky by knowing a lot of random skills that gave him the chance to survive. In addition, he describes getting close to SS officers often in his story. His survival was not all black and white, it was complicated and filled with getting ahead wherever he could to survive.
