He explains how he feels inadequate trying to create a story about all these horrible experiences that he's heard about in great detail, but was never even a part of. On this page in particular, Vladek is shown suddenly yelling at Artie for wasting wooden matches to smoke and make coffee, but later admits he has at least 50 matches left. He clearly wants to save money and yells at others, but he doesn't lack money. There's clearly a lot of trauma he's affected by, and this affects the people around him. 

In addition, Vladek's survival is complex. He was extremely lucky by knowing a lot of random skills that gave him the chance to survive. In addition, he describes getting close to SS officers often in his story.
