Hi Jennifer! My teachers always used technology all the time in social studies. I wish we could of used ipads or chromebooks more.

My 4th grade geography book started with a lesson about flying across the United States. I have never been near an airplane, much less flown. I had no prior knowledge whatsoever! Technology that could have given some perspective would have been invaluable. The one thing I remember about 7th grade social studies is falling asleep in class. Had there been technology allowing some type of interactive learning I might have remembered learning something!

When I was a student, videos were the extent of technology. I did not like Social Studies as a student. It was very boring and dry to me. If I had access to all of the neat technology when I was in school, I think that I would have found Social Studies to be much more interesting.

One problem for me was when i was in my undergrad program a lot of technology was in its infancy and therefore there wasn't much to use. The most memorable instance we did was when the professor set up a video conference (super new technology in the early 2000's) and allowed us to discuss the situation in New Orleans. We were an environmental history class and this professor we got to conference with was on the leading edge of whistleblowing about the safety of NOLA should a hurricane hit. This conference took place in the fall of 2004. I distinctly remembered him saying "New Orleans is in a bowl and if they were to take a direct hit this would be historic in its devastation."

The uniqueness of the Video Conferencing at the time caused me to be far more engaged than I normally would have been if my UCA professor would have just taught the exact same lesson from our traditional classroom.

My social studies teacher relied heavily on John Stossel vidoes, haha. I would have likes to have better visuals in the form of videos or time lapse slides (where you move the cursor back and forth to see change) for talking about changes to borders or the movement of people groups. History and timelines are hard for me to grasp from just words, so visuals would have gone a long way for me.

We used technology in the classroom for research and making presentations. I wish the technology was able to be given out by students as I didn't have a computer or and sometimes I didn't have internet to use another device. So even if it was offered to me, I couldn't really use it. I am glad to see more technology has been spread to the students even if it is limited and not the greatest.
